Generator Fuel Storage

With hurricane season approaching, I'm trying to solve the issue of fuel storage for running a gasoline generator for a week or so. I have a Chevy 2500 that holds 42 gallons of fuel. Anyone know of a way to access that fuel easily? You can't just stick a hose down the fuel neck. Any thoughts or other options besides 10 5 gallon cans or a $300 fuel cart?

I bought an epoxy lined 55 gallon drum (16ga) and a transfer pump. My plan is to store 55 gallons of stabilized ethanol free fuel that I turn over every 2 years along with filling up my 6 five gal containers if something likely to impact me enters the gulf.

All in I think it was $200 for the drum and $180 for the pump. You could go with a cheaper drum and pump but I felt better having a little more steel around my gas.

I looked into siphoning from the 36 gallon tank on my F150 but it would have been too much trouble.

I have 6 VP race cans in the front corner of my garage full of 93. Every month at the end of the month, instead of going to the pump, I dump that 30-35 gallons of 93 in my truck & toss the cans in the back. Next day I'm out & about, I fill my cans with 30-35 gallons of 93 & sit in the front of the garage, rinse, repeat. The cans are going to sit regardless, so I keep a fresh rotation & am ready should an outage occur.

Tip for race cans at half price. Theyre stamped not rated for fuel but they're the exact same manufacturer as my VP from Buccees.

Too bad Buccees doesn't actually sell VP cans and instead sells off brand garbage. I have one sitting in my shop that had the fuel hose break off on the 2nd use. Their vent less caps are terrible.

Propane is the way to go but if not, I like plastic 30 gallon drums. Just make sure you buy them ahead of time. Leave them empty until you think you might need them. Much easier to handle than 55s. Get a couple of the shake style safety siphons. Then just get a couple 5 gallons that you keep full and rotate through regular.

Keeping a large generator fed for any length of time is a pain in the rear.

I don't mess with the factory caps anymore. Cans hold up well. I replace all the caps with these.

The green one I got at Buccees 9 years ago is VP branded. Can't speak to them now as I've switched to the equally awesome Atwood's.

I've got two of these. Plus a few five gallon gas cans.

I have four 5 gallon cans plus the 7 gallons my generator holds. I don't keep them full as the typical outage scenario where I live is a hurricane and I pay enough attention to storms that if one is coming remotely close i'll fill my gas and then as well as the generator itself. 10 gallons will get me through about 24 hours. So I can go almost 3 days. Generally at that point there will be enough places with power that I can fill my gas cans again.

This is what they've been selling the last few years. Ventless garbage

Why not plumbed in natural gas if available on-site ?

Seems like it would solve your next comment

Imma order one.

Maybe swap out the cap and hose like the dude above.

I bet hundreds of thousands of gallons of gas has been spilled into the environment because of the stupid environmentally-friendly safety cans.

There is nothing safe or environmentally friendly about spilling gas everywhere every single time you use it.

I can't even imagine a more worthless product.

Its like the dumbass who designed that **** had never actually used a gas can in their entire life.

Race cans are the only way to go.

Check out Amazon. Seen much better pricing than that. Lots of options so pricing varies a bit(around $35 with a hose) With hose, without hose, singles, four packs.

I bought some tax free during the emergency preparedness tax free weekend from home depot of all places. At the time they were $27 a piece(had o buy a four pack), now they're $35 (before tax)which isn't bad.

Most filler necks of cars built in the last 25 years have anti siphon valves in them and make it difficult to snake a hose down into the tank

I've got a fuel cart that I purchased and never used.
It's sitting in my barn if you are interested.

To access fuel in tank, remove schrader valve from fuel rail test port, jam hose over test port and run into fuel jug.

Remove fuel pump relay, turn ignition on, then jump the terminals. It takes a bit of time to fill 5 gallon jug, but not terrible. Disconnecting the fuel line from fuel rail would likely flow quicker, but you'll need to piece together a hose barb-male fuel line adapter.

No tips here, but just wanted to toss out that depending on where you are, be mindful as you start storing more fuel. I believe once you break 25 gallons you get into technically needing to meet certain storage methods/criteria. A lot of city codes and deed restrictions may also have certain limits. Not saying don't do it, just know the rules for your location and don't proceed forward in ignorance.

They make test relays with a switch on top. If you swap out your fuel pump relay with the test relay you can switch the fuel pump on and off manually without having to jump wires.

I like this idea more and more. Gonna order the **** and some tubing and try it out.

Clean filtered gas or diesel. If you had about 10 foot of hose, you could fill up just about anything you need gas in.

That male fuel line fitting will certainly work for GM trucks, but not sure if it'll fit others. Not sure what you drive.

I drained about 20 gallons of gas from my 06 Silverado via the fuel rail test port a few months ago.

Similar question to OP...slightly different storage situation

Have couple gas cans I cycle thru regularly. But our extra backup for fuel could be the boat I keep in our garage. Has 24 gallon tank. Question then is getting fuel out of the tank???

It has about 2 feet of hose from fuel port to tank. And right where line meets tank it makes 90 degree angle. I had old garden hose that's kind of narrow diameter but it's old and rigid. I tried feeding that down but it only went a little ways before it hit first curve and wouldn't go. I think it's cause the old hose isn't flexible enough.

do you guys think the one posted above that is on Amazon would work?

What is the make and model of the boat engine?

Carb or fuel injection?

Some tanks have EPA **** on the fuel fill now so that might cause a problem going in through the fuel fill port. You might be better off going through the pickup tube or directly off the fuel rail as discussed above.

If you can easily access the fuel sender, six 8mm screws and you have direct access to the tank.

Looked at those and thought it seemed like a good idea. The problem is you can buy 6 - 5 gallon cans for about the same price as one 14 gallon container.
