How long do you want to ignore this user?
I am planning on buying two 1911s this summer. One will be a Delta Elite 10mm. No question about it. I have done enough research on them to know that I want one from new to about 2015 or so.

Question for the 2nd. I have had a couple pass thru my gun safe over the years but got burned one time years ago on a Series 70 that had been worked over by the previous owner. Fortunately I got out of it only losing a little money. But I don't want that to happen again. I am going to familiarize myself with them with a new gun before buying a used one again.

So what do I buy? Kimber? Colt? Spend the money on a Wilson Combat or Ed Brown?

Where should I be looking? Must be US made.

Thanks

I would include Dan Wesson's in your list as they are quality firearms! I love my 10mm valor v-bob!

If you want a Kimber, make sure the one you want is actually available. Tried ordering a couple of Kimber's for some customers, and was told those particular pistols were on an 8-12 month lead time

Maybe not.

I have a used les Baer in store that is in mint condition... if that tickles you at all. Otherwise, huge fan on Dan Wesson for the dollars. I picked up a Valor from a poster here several years ago andthat went straight into my personal stash

Their bottom of the line Spartan used to have Philippines slide, frame, and barrel with US made small parts. Gun was fitted and assembled by STI still. All of their high end guns were US made and I think the entire line is now.

Good to know.

EyeGuy, Il PM you about that Les Baer.

But I am generally looking for a full sized 1911 in .45, preferably with an ambi safety.

i have shot kimbers quiet a bit. used to shoot USPSA, wasn't very good, just shot a LOT. my full size stainless kimbers were always reliable. Compared to Browns and Wilsons fairly inexpensive

Colt Wiley Clapp is a good value and great all-around pistol for carry. Apart from that model, it is hard to recommend much from Colt as a value. Used Special Combat Government models used to be my thing, but they've gone way up in price.

Dan Wesson is excellent in the $1200-1800 range. Les Baer if you want a notch above that. From there you are into $2500+ territory to get a Guncrafter, Alchemy, Wilson Combat, Ed Brown, etc.

Check out the classifieds section on 1911Addicts.com. I've done more buying and selling over there than I care to admit and always had pleasant transactions.

On the more affordable side, Kimbers get a bad wrap, but I had one for a decade and ran 3500 trouble free rounds through it.

OK Now yall are getting my attention. I had dismissed STI because of their foreign parts but if they are US made, well, I live 30 miles from Georgetown.

Yea I am generally very 'value' minded, but not on this pistol. I will pay for what I want.

I really want a Series 70 and a Series 80, but I am not educated on 1911s anough to spot aftermarket parts or any other problems. Hand me an old revolver or a bolt action deer rifle and I got it. 1911s not so much. But I want too.

If cost isn't an obstacle:

Wilson
Nighthawk
Les Baer
Fusion
Jason Burton Heirloom Precision
Springfield custom shop

If cost is somewhat of an obstacle

Springfield, Dan Wesson, Colt

Budget

Some Springfield variants
Ruger
Rock Island ( these are super nice for the price you pay)

Colt Special Combat Government will be a Series 80. Series 70 pistols carry a higher price tag as they are more sought after.

Gunbroker started charging sales tax, and has become a popular location for scammers, so I'd be very careful there. The 1911Addicts site is hard to beat for learning what your preferred features and flavors are. You won't typically see bubba 'smithed junk for sale there, it will be high-quality to premium pistols marketed to people who know what is legit and what is not.

Here's a budget friendly Springfield. I bought a Springfield Ronin in 9mm from this place a few months back and had shipped to my FFL. I went back and forth between the two before choosing the Ronin.

I have a brand new delta elite 10mm, never shot. Bought from Gordy's in Houston. I also have an Ed Brown TX edition 1911 45 that is pretty cool. All safe queens, but if you are interested let me know. I also have a ton of 10MM i just picked up in Comfort TX... I recently picked up a Fierce Fire arm with premium optics that are killing my budgets... I am not near as rich as others on the board.

I also love Eye guy, by the way. He set up my son for a beautiful weapon. Son heads to West Point in one week...

Not including Ed Brown on that list is a huge fail.

They're all so fantastic. My Sig 1911 has chewed through almost two decades of rounds and can never sit in the same row as Dan Wesson or Wilson, but. I love shooting it.

You can't go wrong with so many great choices.
