I use the electric traps in my farm building. Work great for mice. Don't have rats though.

IMO the key is using the right bait on the old fashioned trap. I've had the best luck using dehydrated fruit. It's tough enough they have to tug on it, then adios.
I don't think you know me.

Wife started hearing rats above our bedroom. Zero access to that part of attic without cutting a hole in the ceiling or in the room that shares a wall with a big step down.

Not sure how they are getting in there, but figure with an attached garage and junk by the walls, they've probably made a hole somewhere. Or can they get in through weep holes?

Set out one electric and one of the plastic snap traps. Both with peanut butter.

The electric had some peanut butter on the bottom so seemed to be messed with but no rat.

Snap trap for the win. Set it near a wall I found one dropping.

Any wild guesses on how many to expect? Hopefully they stop making noise.

Reloaded and waiting for more.

It tried all kinds of methods when they got in my garage. Old school rat traps loaded with cheese are what finally did the trick.

I have a building at the farm with a trash pit 100 yards away. We get lots of rats in that building. I know where they come in and out. I put one at the entrance and have killed eight since spring with one trap. I didn't want a poisoned rat dying behind something and stinking up the place. I like the trap because they work great, they are cheap, you can open them with your foot to clear and reset, and I get to verify a body count. I have tried everything else above and this is your answer. Don't overthink it.

We use these in barns and warehouses. They work. It takes a little bit but once one goes up they leave their scent so others think it's a safe path.

The electric traps are interesting. I just solved a raccoon problem by hooking up my electric dog fence across the hole they were climbing into my attic. I had been battling them for a long time, trying to get them out without risking one dying in my eves and stinking up the house. This worked quick and I even got the Mama on camera learning about the dangers of 5,000 volts.

You have some water in the bucket to drown them, correct? Interesting that Amazon didn't really discuss "disposal" of the mice/rats from this trap. Or are they promoting it as a live trap?

Bucket is half full of water. Yes, they drown. We've opened the lid many times and had as many as 15-20 inside after just a couple days.

We had a new guy who got some hazing - the guys told him to empty the "water bucket" not telling him it had been almost a week and sitting in 100 deg temperatures. I heard he blew his lunch everywhere.

That's what worked for this one. Will see later today when I get home if I have rat #2.

Im reading this as a guy who just won some extra space in the garage for more tools. I would set out some dog or cat food and begin work on your shop build.

This 100%. Super cheap and extremely effective. Plenty of videos on making this trap, this one is making it a little more complex than needed but it works.

I have one of these in my barn. I've caught mice in it with no bait. I left one in my cabin in Colorado with no bait while we were gone and a month later we knew something was wrong when we opened the front door.

Lesson learned the hard way. Don't set traps if you're not around to check them.

I bet it took a while for that smell to go away?
