I just purchased a home in San Antonio after my divorce and the house has been unoccupied for some time. Needless to say the yard was not maintained at all. The yard is overrun with weeds including some type of broadleaf weed (that's what google calls it) that is all over this area. I had it in my last yard here but it was behind the garage so I never tried to do anything about it. Whatever this stuff is though, the grass will not shoot runners out into it to choke it out and take over. Looking for advice as to what to do.

Thanks in advance.

Edited for pics. Hope they come through.

It's hard to tell without a pic but I would try to knock it back with a mower and see if that gives your grass a chance.

Does it have little yellow flowers? I'm guessing that it's horse herb, that's what is taking over my neighborhood. If so, the only thing that worked for me was hand pulling. It seems to thrive getting mowed, and three coats of two herbicides didn't even slow it down.

PlantNet has a decent app to help with ID. I would use some 2,4-d to clean up everything if it is predominantly broadleaf weed.

What grass type is your yard? Mine is Bermuda and zoysia. Hit it with a tank mix of Speed Zone, Blindside, and methylated seed oil for the surfactant, and be sure to apply preemergent next year before the growing season (really too late at this point). Pretty sure Speed Zone and Blindside are both safe for St. Augustine and centipede too.

Thanks for the advice so far. I tried to upload pics into the OP. Please see if it worked and advise.

Thanks again.

If the lot is small enough, I would just kill it all, and plant some new sod and be done.

Your weeds can be easily controlled with a post emergent broad leaf weed killer (check with any local garden center). Hit the weedy areas with the herbicide, fertilize your turf three to four times during the growing season and adequately irrigate during dry times and you'll have a great looking yard in no time! We're local to BCS but check out our website for tips greenerlawnscapes.com

I have that stuff in my yard. I have never gotten it to go away completely. It usually comes in strong after the Bermuda goes dormant during a drought. My best success has been with a 2,4-D based weed killer. I am pretty lazy about my yard and only spray for weeds every couple of years.

I'd be careful spraying Speed Zone above 85 degrees.

^ Agree

Good point. I spray it on cooler days or when I'm not concerned about damaging the grass.
