I've been hunting axis deer for quite a while in southwest Texas, and I found it interesting that nobody (to my knowledge) seems to have a standard name for male and female axis.
Elk and moose are divided into bulls and cows, whitetails are bucks and does, and red stag are stags and hinds. One article I found argued that "bull" referred to animals that make a roaring noise, hence elk and moose falling into that category, and axis definitely have a sort of bellow that they are quite fond of, especially this time of the year.
Does anyone have any idea what male and female axis should be called?
