It's all downhill after 50!

edit** HOWEVER... there is something to be said for man's strength. Not sure when, but no so far in the recent past I think my old man could still take me.

I bought a large steel, homemade toolbox at an auction. It's probably 3 feet tall and 5 feet wide. It took a forklift to get it in the bed, but when I got home I was surprised to find it packed with tools, nuts and bolts and other crap. After unloading all that (probably 200+ pounds), I'm able to move it around in the bed by myself - straining pretty hard.

I'm no spring chicken and all my friends are older than 50 as well. First, can the tailgate hold that much weight? Should I get some ramps at Harbor Freight and try to slide it down with a couple friends? Thoughts?

If you're in BCS and need a hand, PM me. I don't have any equipment but I'm a hand and would be glad to help.

Thanks brother. I'm down on the gulf coast. Gonna grab some help from the yard guy when I get home.

Park under a tree. Put some tow straps on it attached to a rope secured to the tree. Ratchet that thing up enough to clear the bed. Move the truck. Untie the rope, and slowly lower it down. Then you just need a dolly right?

This- I found a steal on a multiprocess welder that was loaded easily enough with a forklift. On the way home I stopped at Northern and bought a chain hoist rated for 500lbs and parked it under tree. Hoisted it clear of the bed and pulled out from underneath it. Have something handy to go underneath it so you can roll it back to pavement. That last part is pretty important.

My father-in-law has one of these that he uses all the time for getting heavy objects out of this truck bed or off of a trailer.

Harbor Freight Foldable Crane
Too short, probably.

This is how middle aged men jack up their rotator cuff and it'll take a year or more to heal. Use ur wisdom of age and not your braun of youth and talk a youngster into moving it for you.

Is there a smaller crane you can use to unload the heavy duty one?

A) Do you have help?
B) ramps? Come along? Boat winch?

I would take the tailgate off to eliminate movement.

If you have a long pry bar/can lean it up, get some small PVC pipe - say 3/4", and put them under it.

You'll want larger pieces of pipe/range golf balls to put it down on, depending on the surface.

DO NOT GET DOWNHILL OF A LOAD! (I know it's common sense, but people forget. I have a scar and a memory of a damaged femoral from "he manning" something off a pick up.)

Use the winch/pulley/come along to ease the load down the ramp.

Golf balls can be used to move around surprising heavy objects.

Can you borrow an engine hoist? Uh, guess you can't go get it now.

Broncos called out my manhood. So I muscled that b***h up on a ramp by myself and got it down. Probably a hernia or two, but it's done. Thanks for the responses and guidance.

For next time, they make hitch mounted game winches. They're usually for "up to" 400 lbs, so you'd probably be fine.

But yeah, it's a hand which and a rotating boom arm.

I am in awe at the number of actual serious responses on this thread to this question....what the hatties is going on here on the OB? Where is the heckling and why is the OP not catching crap for asking a question about being a man?

One thing required to hold a man card is the ability to overload the crap out of the bed of your truck and then to figure out how to get said overloaded crap out of it with 2x4s and orange ratchet straps.

Dikfer!

It's definitely a Dikfer...

Ratchet Tie down straps have no way of slowly letting things down. When you release them you have no control of the weight.
Good friend was badly hurt unloading a gun safe with ratchet straps lifting it off a trailer.
Maybe you are thinking of a different type of strap?

The bigger ones with Handles give you enough leverage to control them. They're basically mini cone alongs or handvwinches in the way they operate. I've used them this way to lift my entire boat to work on it under my carport.

Never have seen those. Where did you get them. So with these.... when you release them the spool does not disengage... it is still in gear, for lack of better terms?

Refrigerators are a lot lighter than they used to be.

Like any proper ratchet, both the handle lock and the release lock engage, so to free spool it, you'd have to depress them both at once under some load to fully release it, which is not easy. If you just release one, or the other, and never at the same time, they work like a come along does, and you can use the handle as a lever to tighten or release the load.

These are 27' trucking cargo straps with a 3,333 lb working load limit and a 10,000lb break limit. I cut them down in length some and usually use 4 of them to secure my tractor to my trailer. They're only about $15 each if you shop around.

That looks more like a small dumpster than a toolbox!

Seriously though, nice score
