Trying my best to narrow down my boat search. With the current high demand/cost for used boats, my goal is to start a new build as soon as possible so that it's ready for Spring/Summer 2022. If you were building/buying today, which route would you go? Take the following into consideration:
  • Location - Corpus Christi, Rockport, Seadrift, Port O'Connor
  • Price - Trying to stay between $80K - $90K but max is $100K
  • Engine - Mercury 300 at a minimum, possibly 350 or 400
  • Build time - Assuming 6-8 months minimum for most
  • Shallow running, fast, smooth and dry ride

Below are some of the boats that I'm considering:
  • Haynie 23 Cat
  • Haynie 23 Super Cat
  • Haynie 24 Cat
  • Shoalwater 23 Cat
  • Majek M2 Illusion
  • Majek Reaper
  • El Pescador 24 Cat
  • JH Outlaw 250X
You may all go to hell, and I will go to Texas.

I really enjoy riding in the El Pescador 24 but why do you need a 350-400? Those things run high 60s with a 300 and pop up with ease in really shallow water? I'm all for more power but it's seems like diminishing returns in a shallow bay boat at some point... to each it's own.

I got Shoalwater 23 Cat and Haynie 24 Cat priced towards the end of February and they all fell in that range.
  • Shoalwater 23 Cat with Mercury 300L Pro XS - $84,127.30
  • Haynie 24 Cat with Mercury 300 Pro XS - $81,354.62
  • Haynie 24 Cat with Mercury 300 Pro XS DTS - $83,281.46
  • Haynie 24 Cat with Mercury 300 Verado - $83,318.72
  • Haynie 24 Cat with Mercury 350 Verado - $85,889.63
  • Haynie 24 Cat with Mercury 400 Verado - $89,439.92

First thing I did was look into buying used but most of what I'm seeing is they're going for the same price as new, unless you look at much older models with more hours. But still, they're listed for more than they're worth.

I wouldn't really say I need a 350 or 400. Just depends on the boat really. I probably wouldn't put anything over a 300 on a Shoalwater 23 Cat. Haynie 24 Cat I would definitely consider a 350 or 400 due to their heavier weight. A buddy of mine has a new Shoalwater 23 Cat with a Suzuki 300 and he's only hitting mid-50's right now. Might see some improvement after he tries out some new props though.

10-4 makes sense now. I was thinking you're only getting a couple of mph's more for another 5-10K.

Didn't you hear? All the fish on the coast died.

What you want and need is a bass boat, to fish the lakes.

What's the # of people you want to be able to fit on the boat? Do you want to stay in the 23-34' range or could you possibly do a 21'?

Saw a reaper at Mansfield and it look really good. Supposedly a Simmons recon hull. The haynie cats do need more power - fished in one last weekend w a 400. Great ride and skinny but no speed demon. Most of the guys I know that run haynies have moved from magnums to cats.

Probably 4-6 max.

I have been fortunate enough to ride in each boat you have mention except the Reaper which is the Simmons RC24 mold. Haynie, M2, and the Outlaw are all good boats but not going to be speed demons. Of those 3 the Outlaw and Haynie will offer the smoothest ride. The M2 is very shallow but rougher. I ran my buddies Shoalwater for 6 month while my Pescador 24 Cat was being built. They are shallow and will push into the low 60,s with the 300R but I find them rough and they absolutely need trim tabs. The Shoalwater will also slide in the rear. Not a big deal but need to be aware. My El Pescador will run low 60,s with the 300R. I got it to 67 once but that was before trolling motor batteries, just me and about 5 gallons of fuel. Loaded with 4-5 guys 60 is the most I can get. My boat has not slide it the rear and the back digs. Overall I am pretty happy with the speed, shallow water capability and rough water performance of my boat. The Haynie and JH are good as well but slower. You are getting into a price point where you may want to check out used Simmons as well.

I've seen a couple Reapers that look really nice. Yeah I believe they bought the RC-24 mold. My only concerns are it's price point over $90K and it being a bolt down console. I've rode on a Haynie 24 Cat and 25 Magnum both with 400s on the back and both were nice rides. I just prefer the cat for it's ability to run and get up shallow.

All are great boats. I don't think you will be unhappy with any of them. I'm running a el pescador 24' cat with a 250 sho and trp lower. 50mph on the top end but gets up stupid shallow stupid fast. Also mine is a little heavier as it has a completely flat deck and safefloor. Currently she is getting a facelift.

How fast are y'all really looking to go?

Not saying you or your buddy are doing it but I see way too many guys running the rigs you're talking about burning flats, tearing up the bottom, and completely screwing over people already wading or poling flats.

Check out Mowdy out of Port Lavaca. A friend took me out on his and it was pretty dang sweet. Not sure on the cost or how it compares to the others...I'm an inlander and don't know much about boats. But I know it's a really nice boat.

Hold on. The EP 24' cat is one of the smoothest cats on the market in rough water.

I put in an order for a Mowdy 25 cat and it meets all of your specs except the speed aspect. I put a Suz 300 on mine and should top out mid 50s. They are smooth and dry but not a speed demon. The lead time was about 5 months. My boat "should" deliver July 1st.

It wouldn't be TexAgs if someone didn't throw in a comment about something you didn't ask for haha
good luck on the search, all are good boats so I don't think you can go wrong. The EP was a close second for me, but mowdy was a lot cheaper when you added all the add ons to each boat.

Well I am possibly looking at selling our Tran Cat 19'. Really Hard decision though as it was my Dad's but just don't get to use in enough. On the fence here with the price of new and if i wanted another boat again.

I get that SCB and Lake & Bay before that really raised the bar on speed for bay boats but since when is mid-50's not a "speed demon?"

I have a tunnel hull Sabine Versatile poling skiff ordered (I'll be running short-shaft Tohatsu 60) and obviously it's much smaller and a much boat used a lot differently than the ones mentioned on here and I have no expectation or need to run much over the mid-30's with it. My previous boat was a Panga Marine 18 Evo with a 90 Etec and it topped out around 36 but unlike the boats listed in here it wouldn't have you pissing blood after running in a chop. Fairly shallow draft too at 10" and highly versatile boat.

You know how i know you've probably never ridden in the boats he's looking at?? FWIW, not everything shallow running is a RFL 21, although if you know what you're doing in that boat you also won't be pissing blood.

Both of those Majeks and the JH Outlaw will absolutely beat you up in a chop. The cats are better but you sacrifice some running draft with them.

If you wait one year you'll be able to get those $90k boats a lot cheaper.... there's about to be a ton of 1-2 year old boats for sale.

Anyway, I've had 3 majek 25 extremes and it's a great boat. By far my favorite. I never needed speed so I ran a 250 at 60mph. Saves gas.

I've got an illusion now. It's insane where it'll go. 250 will push it 50 max loaded.

I love this illusion but it is rough. Go drive them all. Best way to pick IMO.

Have Fun. What you're doing now is the most fun and cheapest part of owning a boat. Lol

That's a lot of money to catch 3 reds and a few 18" trout.
