Anything good here to eat?

Mumfords BBQ is legit.

What ya hunting? I can't help with high end food, as we are always in a hurry to get somewhere so we grab something quick or only sit for 20-30 mins most times.

Burgers:
Jim's Big Burger by Academy is decent.
If you want an old school malt and some steak fingers, head over to Dairy Treat and "Treat Yourself!". No inside seating here but it is an experience. May want to be strapped in that side of town after dark.

Cafe food:
For good cafe food, we hit Ramsey's sometimes when we are around there.
Double J eatery has good CFS.

Pizza:
Double Dave's is another option, if you want a buffet for cheap!

Mexican Food:
Never have found real good mom and pop Mexican food in Victoria. Not sure why. About the best we have found is about 5 miles North of Academy on 77 on the left, if memory serves. Been a while (pre-covid) since we have been there though. I can't find that one on the map.

Cruise to Seadrift (about 30-40 mins South) and check out the water, then eat the Enhicladas Al Carbon at La Terraza. May want to call first to make sure they are open on Mondays. I would say the same for calling Cathy's in POC, if you want to cruise another 30 mins South. Then you could stroll on the pier and check out the beach.

Gonzales' on 59 Bus south, just past the river bridge. I don't think they are open in the evening except Thursday-Sat.

Another vote for Los Palmos

I grew up 15 minutes from Victoria for 18 years and my parents still live there and I can say with full confidence... no there is nothing good to eat in Victoria.

I'm only kinda kidding. Nothing is really great.

Noots is pretty good thai food, but they are closed Mondays.

Burger Nation is probably the best burger in town and its pretty decent too.

Oddly enough, there really isn't any great Mexican food there. It's all pretty ho-hum and very greasy. VeraCruz was good at one time but has gone waaaay downhill. Some people like Las Palmas

Yamato is a pretty good sushi bar and hibachi grill.

Do you have a dozen "Visit Victoria" pamphlets with you at all times also?

What can I say? When it is pouring at the coast, and we are there fishing, we usually need some boat or trailer parts or we are jonesin for some soft plastics from Academy/The Tacklebox/Waterloo Pro Shop. Once we solve that, our fat bellies demand to be maintained!!!

Breakfast, go to Mi Ranchito on Ben Wilson. Get there early as the line starts to form. Want something nice, go to The Pump House. Spicy Pecan crusted pasta is legit.

I believe he was the owners son. Owner still cooks I believe.

Tomorrow is also taco Tuesday.

Ventura's has 1.29 chicken tacos that are good and Frances Marie has .99 beef tacos that are good.

Best pizza is Niki Roma's in the mall. All hand made.

Most of the sit down Mexican restaurants are very similar and just ok. Las Palmas and Frances Marie's are probably the best.

If you want something different go to the tacos 2 compadres food truck on Houston highway near Zarskys. Order a gringa, alambre, or quesabrilla. You can thank you me later!

So... since he was only there the night, I'm thinking he is done with our recommendations. Which leads me to my derail... with the number of people replying, I'm curious how many currently live in Victoria vs grew up there vs have family there?

Me... I was VHS class of '97. Met my wife in high school. My parents, sister, FIL & MIL still live there. I don't go back terribly often but from my perspective not much has really changed over the years.

I work in Victoria

I work here only. Commute from Hoechheim area. Wife is from that area.

Live in Hallettsville, commute to Victoria for work.

Food here sucks.

Pump House is probably the best option. Tons of tex-mex but none really stand out from the others. Guadalajara is probably my favorite for tex-mex but I only eat there for lunch. Ventura's quesadilla rolls are good. Mumphord's BBQ is pretty good.

Back when we lived there 2010-2013, we'd hit up Pumphouse, las palmas and La Hacienda. Breakfast tacos from Taqueria El Rodeo #2. No idea if they're still there/operating.

I told my wife I was taking her to lunch one day when we both were in town. I told her you had to be a member to eat there and I was. She was somewhat skeptical but looked a little excited.

As we pulled into Sams, she called me and asked what we were doing. I asked her if she wanted the pizza combo or hotdog combo.

I still get grief for that lunch date.

Is The Corral still there? As a kid, when we'd drive by there (my grandparents lived in Victoria) that sign out front use to fascinate me.

Building is, but it's closed. Heard the owners of Frances Marie's are wanting to open it back up.

Had Double Js today while passing through for work.

It's a legit nice lunch spot with some variety. Been quality food for seems like 20 years. I recommend it.

But nothing in Victoria should ever be confused with "destination" food.

ETA: grew up in the area, folks still around. It is not a terrible place to live, but not much glitz and glamor.

Born and raised and live here. It's home.

On the food....double j chicken fried steak or chicken fried pork steak....
