I was wondering if anyone knows of any good places on public land to go turkey hunting in Texas. Preferably somewhere within four hours of college station. I appreciate any suggestions.

Closest option is Sam Houston National Forest that technically has some birds but not a lot. Sabine has more birds but still isn't a great option - a lot of parcels and not all of them hold birds

Four hours will put you in Fannin County on the Caddo National Grasslands if you hold your foot right. There are birds there. I'm not a turkey hunter but have seen birds on the trot around those parts recently.

It's a real pain in the ass of a place to hunt and mess with, but it's technically public land. Fort Hood. Lots of birds.

SHNF doesn't have turkey listed in the regs.

It used to - the eastern has done pretty poor after the initial success in the late 90s /early 2000s

I talked to TPWD Turkey program leader and asked about the super stocking In the Angelina and when it may re-open. He said most of the tracked birds that were released have moved to the private land surrounding the forest ( mostly managed timber company lands). The deer leases in that land have kept a pretty stable population and there are few Turkey hunters in that area. Didn't have a target date for when the Angelina may reopen
