I saw a post today on Galveston Party Boat's Facebook page that they spotted a pod of orca on a 30 hour tuna trip. The video was amazing! Some giants swimming right with the boat, and even some calves playing and jumping. I wish I knew how to share a FB video on here... maybe soon someone will put it on YouTube.

If you are on FB, go check it out!

I was expecting something along the lines of Laredo Heat given that it's spring break. Pleasantly surprised.

A welcome break from the normal whale sightings on Galveston Island.

Is it ok if I still call them "Killer Whales"?
Not sure if the OB is becoming a safe space, don't want to trigger anyone!!

That is cool!

It is amazing how HUGE they are up close.

You see a 6 ft dorsal fin from a kayak and you cannot help but pucker up.
We did that trip when we passed through Friday Harbor. Didn't get to see Orca's but it was still a great trip. My wife was a bit relieved we didn't see any that day.

Man I'd be pissed if I booked a group on a party boat and they took us on a 30 hour "wicked tuna" detail.

Maybe they're great to see from a distance but I don't think there's an animal other than a polar bear that I'm more afraid of.

Those things a ****ing killing machines. They kill great white sharks.

i am pretty sure no human has ever been killed by wild killer whales, although there is evidence of stalking actions.
if they would frequent warmer water more often i bet youd see that statistic change

that said, we have two types here:
1. residents - who eat only fish
2. Bigg's (formerly called transients) - that eat mammals.

the residents will not harm you at all, so if you can identify that your whales are part of the three resident pods, there is nothing to worry about.

but Bigg's would concern me. they also happen to be the largest of the killer whales.

I think your strategy for identifying dangerous killer whales has some flaws.

They don't mess with humans. Even in a kayak, they will give you the side eye as they move on through but they don't really interact. They do like the pressure wave in front of bigger boats and their wakes, but are too cautious usually to get up close to people.

Orcas will straight up end your day of fishing though! Everything you hook up will come up with just the head left on it. lol!

I realize that "general rules" exist but this isn't one that I would want to test. I would have been chumming out my back end if this were me.

Awesome video. I did a whale watching tour out of Vancouver a few years back where we saw humpbacks, seals, sea lions, otters, eagles but sadly no orcas. Definitely want to see them in the wild someday

I don't have FB. Can anyone find a way to copy and host the video somewhere and post it? I'd really like to see it!

On the Alaskan cruise the wife and I went on several years back, there was an onboard naturalist type dude who did wildlife talks and stuff throughout the duration of the cruise. He seemed to have a pretty big love affair with killer whales. I do remember him saying that only 1 person has ever been documented to have been killed by a killer whale. And said person was a bad person who did something bad, and the killer whales could sense this about the fella and that's why they killed him.

The fish eaters are very well documented, and you can buy or download ID guides to identify which whales you are seeing. And if you get 1, you can then assume the rest nearby are all friendlies as well since the two types do not interact.

Despite the statistics being thrown around. Killer whales are apex predators that can weigh between 3k to over 10k lbs. I think those details are being lost in this discussion. I may be misunderstanding what you are trying to say here but trying to ascertain how dangerous an individual whale is seems like a bad strategy for judging the appropriate interaction with a wild animal.

Anyone ever see the documentary "Luna"? Sad ending but the orca was extremely friendly to humans.

I guess you did not hear about the attacks last year of Spain.

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/oct/06/previous-incident-may-have-led-orcas-to-target-boats-say-experts-spain-portugal

Since 10 August, crews sailing off the Spanish region of Galicia have reported 22 interactions with orcas also known as killer whales a third of which have resulted in varying degrees of damage to their boats. In a handful of cases, boats have been left with damaged steering systems.

After studying photos and video footage of the encounters, a working group of Spanish and Portuguese experts, including marine biologists and government officials, has identified three orcas present in 61% of the incidents.

REVENGE

Did they follow clearly established protocols and ask to see their Resident Pod cards? If not, they got what was coming to them.

In today's world, your username would send the snowflakes running for safe space cover. The term "killer whales" would give them seizures. They don't call them "safety whales" for a reason, though.
