I've ****ing had it. 4 floods, a tornado, a hurricane, a near wildfire, and now this just in 5 years. I am sick of my *******ed ranch turning into a full time hair on fire job every time the world isnt completely calm.

Am planning the next ranch. 100% off grid.

Direct hit from f5 tornado? No problem, pour another drink and video it for some youtube income. Polar vortex -20 degrees? Pour another drink and turn the heat up to 85 in the house. Flood? Who cares? Watch it all go by. Emp? No problem. Nuclear bomb? Well, ok, you gotta die sometime.

Bottom line i am never heating well tanks, hauling horse water, wrapping pipes, dripping faucets, hauling **** away from floods, trying to feed and water freaked out cows, running or barricading from hurricanes, having nowhere to go for tornados, **** all that.

Planning 2500 sq ft living
2500 shop
1200 barn
1200 attached tall shed

I guess probably 40kw running electrical load.
Should i look at a mix of wind/solar/propane for power? What is most reliable and easiest to manage/maintain - self-regulate? Internet/cell tower?

How do you keep well/septic/plumbing totally impervious regarless of fire, freeze, flood or anything else?
How much clearing do you need for a forest fire break? Anything better than a metal building for that?

Can all that be built for a 200mph sustained wind load?

Are there any contractors that build really durable *****

Ideas welcome. This is probably going to happen in the brenham-belleview-austin county-wharton county area.

Im also getting the **** out of any major county. If i have to shoot someone for real this time, or someone's animal on my ranch, or whatever, i am not going to be judged by a soros da or a jury full of foreigners or urban yuppies with no clue about life.

you are too damn close to houston for that to work, you need to go at least 250 miles northwest
NO AMNESTY!

in order for democrats, liberals, progressives et al to continue their illogical belief systems they have to pretend not to know a lot of things; by pretending "not to know" there is no guilt, no actual connection to conscience. Denial of truth allows easier trespass.

Interesting thread will follow!

I'd say mix of energy inputs starting with wind for 40kw supplemented by solar etc

Would definitely consider geo thermal and going partially underground if super serious - And you could work that into a plan for flooding with the design and limit impact of high winds in the right area I'd think

You're looking for an abandoned below ground nuclear silo in the middle of ugly nowhere.

Here you go.

Well after all this I wouldn't rely too much on wind or solar!!

I don't think you want to sniff wind and solar if you are looking for reliable energy sources.

Given enough $$$, yes. 200mph would be roughly double the design wind speed for that area, but it could definitely be done.

"Go west, young man, go west and grow up with the country."

Go where your money buys more land and more landscape.

I love our place on the river. Will be a sad day when we move on from it, but I know the feeling about fighting nature AND Houston.

I cant move as far as i'd like. So still in zombie hiking range from houston.

I started looking into some stuff. I'll post ideas if they look interesting.

https://upriseenergy.com/50kw-portable-power-center

I doubt these guys are cost effective or robust enough for full time use, but its an interesting idea.

Last i researched batteries arent good enough to just do solar. However, if you mixed solar, wind and propane generator it would be a good mix. Or maybe just solar and propane. The key would be durable, reliable, maintenance free interface between them all, which may be a unicorn.

Also, how does solar or wind get built strong enough for my criteria?

Maybe a massive battery array and propane tank? That way anytime your big propane generator is running any excess is charging and not wasted, and you can cut down your runtime?

Yeah i definitely think part built into the side of a hill would be a good plan. Hills are a little rare in these parts.

Yeah I was thinking build up an earth mound on one side etc - maybe the first level with ability to provide light

I'd look at an earth-ship style home, a windmill feeding a water tank for water, a combination of solar and propane for power generation with a healthy battery bank to store excess generation.

Oh, and a wood stove for heat.

Ya I mean, by a hospital sized propane generator and a 10,000 gallon propane tank.

A mill or two for the generator and 25K to fill the propane tank.

Check out the TV show Homestead Rescue on Discovery/Discovery+. It is a little hokey but it is all about living off grid and their are episodes on all climates from harsh winter Alaska to hot Arizona desert. Since it is about Homesteaders it usually focuses on cheap, boot-strap solutions but might give you some good ideas. The biggest power source is solar but some use buried pipe geothermal or partial underground construction. Lots of info on self-contained food sources Gardens greenhouses etc.

I just finished a 2,200sf metal building from Carolina Carport (don't let the name fool you). I insulated the inside with R30, put in two wood burning stoves and lined every outside wall with Level IIIA "ballistic drywall" (5ft up from the floor).

There is an outfit in Waco that makes it. You provide the sizes and they can make each sheet to order.

They are heavy as hell, so don't go too big unless you've got two or three guys to life them.

It ain't cheap, but neither is a trip to the hospital.
When the truth comes out, do not ask me how I knew.
Ask yourself why you did not.

My battery free solar water wells are pretty disaster proof. Of course no pumping at night but they still produce on really cloudy days.

Redundancy will be your friend and enemy. More cost, more work, more dependable.
