Was searching around last week and found a great deal on this. They just knocked another 30 off their original 599.99 price. Now 569.99 before taxes with free shipping. They shipped mine out same day. They take paypal as well for extra protection. This is the version 2 with the new Beacon Mode. This product is made in the USA and has a good multi year warranty.

It uses replaceable CR123A Batteries in the unit so I ordered some cheap rechargables off ebay.

Ok, so the LTO is a well built unit. Refresh is very good on it and the resolution is good for the price. My only beef is not really a flaw with it, but what it was meant to do. Most people want thermals as a scanning unit to find game. The LTO was not built with that as it's primary function, however. It doesn't have an ocular lens so you have to hold it out to use it. That means it's very small, and will fit in your pocket, but it makes it much more awkward to use than a regular monocular. For most people something like the Flir Scout TK makes more sense (and is cheaper) even though it has a little lower resolution to it. The LTO is great for trailing game and such, but as a scouting unit, it's not the best. Like using a Glock 17 as a concealed carry. Sure, you can do it and it will do the job if that's all you have, but there are other guns that are much better for that role.

I know you're not saying it won't work for scanning but I have LTO 2 and use it for scanning. The place I hunt has a max LOS of 350. Works great to find hogs around 250 or dillo/coons at 100 yards. It doesn't do well in the summer but when it's cool outside I don't have a problem with it. It's sure not as good as something better but I knew what I was getting and I'm not disappointed. I picked it up NIB off eBay for $400, maybe that's why I'm satisfied.

FWIW I CC a Glock 17.

Any of these useful for spotting rats or possums in trees or on the ground?

How far away? But from what i have seen in reviews, yes it would work great. Seen people tracking rabits they were killing with it and they were spotting the corpses easily in the night.

And heres the hd version tracking rats in nyc. Same scope effectively but the resolution is a little better on the hd.
