Recent events have me looking to purchase a generator.

Consumer reports lists these as their top rated inverter generators:
Ryobi ryi4022x. $500-600, rated 84
Echo EGI 4000, $800-900, rated 84
Honda EU3000iS. $2000, rated 85

Pretty big price difference. I dont mind paying for a quality product but the online comparison is very similar.

Anyone have an opinion on the Ryobi or Echo?

I am no expert, but I think Honda is super quiet. but not $1500 more quiet.

I have enjoyed mine as well, no issues and it gets used hard during deer season at my lease for power.

From the teardowns I have seen on Youtube, the Honda has much higher quality internal components and better QC. If you plan to use it a lot and need it to last over the long haul, may be worth the extra money for the Honda. If you just need for standby power at the house and the occasional camping trip then the cheaper models should be fine if properly maintained.

BIG BIG step up in quality from the Ryobi/Echo to the Hondas. Some small engine shops won't even work on Ryobi

Agree with you there. I have the Generac 2200i which is their version. Very quiet as well and around $500 on Amazon. Ran it from 5:30 AM until about 12:15 PM when the power came back on without refueling. Could've gone longer.

That said OP, If you're looking to power more things in your house I'd go with higher wattage. The Generac 2200i can be plugged into a transfer switch to power things like lights, outlets, refrigerator, and even some furnaces, but that's pretty much its bandwidth. Around six items. My buddy just bought a 6500 Dewalt and was able to power pretty much everything in his home except his clothes dryer and hot water heater.

I borrowed my brothers Honda 3000is and it is really nice. You can't even hear it running on the back porch and it just sips fuel. I'm going to be purchasing one soon.

I really like this one

Even better if you time it with the 20% off coupons they offer

A few additional things to consider if you are seriously considering the Honda 3000iu. That generator weighs over 120lbs (might actually be 130lbs). Instead of one 3000, you could get two 2000iu gensets that weigh just under 50lbs. The 2k Honda costs less than half the price of the 3k, weighs less than half that of the 3k, and by buying two 2k Hondas and linking them together you get another 1000 watts of capacity. Gas consumption is nearly identical too. Less weight, less cost, 1/3rd more capacity.

Another reason why you might consider two 2k gensets is the flexibility you get. You can run both when you need up to 4k watts, or just run one when you need less capacity such as if you are camping or tailgating. Believe me, it's a lot easier to load a 47lb genset into the back of your vehicle than it is to load a 130lb genset, especially if they are full of fuel. And if you need both, IMO it is still easier to load 48lbs twice than 130lbs once.

Potentially even more importantly however is the additional security of having two gensets instead of one. With one 3k, if one genset goes down, you have nothing. With two 2k's, if one genset goes down, you still have another.

Again, just something to consider. But I would also agree with others above that something like a sub-$1k Predator may well be a more practical choice.

My honda starts first pull every time and is the most reliable piece of equipment I own.

We have the 7000 watt and two 2000 watt. If you dont need big juice, it is easier to just run 2 of the 2000 watt generators in parallel.

Please keep in mind that for the cost of one Honda 2k watt generator that can only run some lights and small appliances you can buy a 12k-15k watt Westinghouse or Duromax that can power the entire house.

Obviously louder and a little heavier, but didn't make sense to me.

Not exactly apples to apples as that Duromax/Westinghouse isn't an inverter generator like the ones listed in the OP and so isn't recommended for sensitive electronics as it could fry them.

With predator 3500 what could one expect to run with that ?
Can I have someone wire this to our break box and run AC/heat/ fridge?
How much gas does it hold and how long will it run ?

Lastly how do you store these guys? Likely don't want to keep gas in it all year around?

Please keep in mind that a) the OP didn't ask for info on those types of gensets, so I didn't bring up your points, b) higher quality machines cost more than lower quality machines, and the gensets you mentioned are not in the same league as Honda, c) many people are able to understand why higher quality costs more, and they prefer higher quality over big numbers.

Store in the garage.

You could keep gas in one year around, as long as you put in Stabil or similar, and exercise (run w/load) the genset 3-4 times a year, thereby circulating new gas on an occasional basis. Our Honda gensets always have gas in them. You never know when they are going to come in handy.

I got the Honda eu3000is before a hurricane this year but luckily didn't need it then. I ran it 12 hours yesterday with a full size freezer, large frig, space heater and numerous lights and chargers with no problem. It is quiet and has the gas saving eco throttle. I don't remember how many gallons of gas it holds but it ran 12 hours until my electric service came on and I never added gas.

Gas consumption is huge if needed for extended periods. Being less noisy than other makes is great as well.
It is a heavy machine as stated above.

Edit to add per Honda it has a 3.4 gallon gas tank and runs 6.9 to 19.6 hours on 3.4 gallons depending on the load.
Also can run 2 of them together with a parallel cable per Honda. Didn't know that.

Well, when they decided to make something larger than 7000 watts for retail we might be able to get an apples to apples comparison. Until then, they aren't an option. And while not inverter generators, there are many Westinghouse and Duromax options safe for electronics.

I love your glass reviews, but you're off the mark here.

I never stated that a Westinghouse or Duromax was *unsafe* for electronics. So you just go right on thinking that. I'm sure it will make you feel better.

What you can run depends on the load of the appliances you intend to run. But, generally speaking, 3500 watts will run a fair amount of things. Several lights, fridge, fans, window unit AC, electric heater, electric blankets, etc.

When it comes to using it for emergency power at the house, you need to determine what your critical circuits are and do a load calc on those circuits - and when you do a a load calc on an appliance, use starting watts over running watts.

The tank holds about 2 gallons of fuel, maybe 3. I've never actually measured it. I use mine at my deer lease to run my FEMA trailer, and even with an electric wall heater and electric blanket running in the winter, I've never had to wake up in the middle of the night and refuel it. During summer when I run the AC, same thing - still plenty of run time left after I wake up in the morning.

I'd say you get at minimum 8 hours of run time on a 75% load. The electric start on them is hella nice. I run nothing but ethanol free fuel in mine and use it often enough that I don't worry about any fuel left in. I usually also run some seafoam stablizer/treatment just in case, and even after a 6 month break of not using it I didn't have any problems. Always a good practice to run it dry if you can between long periods of non-use though.

Last year I swapped the air filter out for a new one, changed the spark plug and oil. Easy to do, didn't take long. I generally change the oil once a year and use good oil (Royal Purple) and haven't had so much as a single issue outside of a dead battery that was user error - but pull started it up and it hummed along no problem and charged the batter back up.

Only things I don't like are not having a fuel gage on the tank, so it feels like every other time I fill up I end up spilling a little oil, wish the wheels were bigger and it is just heavy enough that I don't like moving it unless I have to (about 100lbs, give or take). But it is quiet, reliable and can run everything I need it to run at camp and I still have capacity left over, so it works.

It would run ~29 amps

So no it would not run a regular hvac unless it is a smaller mini split or window unit.

For gas I keep mine full of 93 octane and treat with Startron ethanol treatment . You can store it dry just make sure you cut the fuel off and run the carb and lines empty before storing and still always use a proven ethanol treatment in it. I've used Startron since 2008 in a marine environment and only every gas engine I own and have had treated 93 octane sit as long As 18 months with zero issues at all with starting.

My generator will be 4 years old in March. I start to up about every 30-60 days and let it run ~ 15 to 20 minutes.
