I have a one acre pound near Hallettsville that is about 15 feet deep in the middle and stocked with cats, bass and perch. Should I expect to lose a lot or all of the fish?

I don't think you'll lose any

That would be awesome. Our pond turned 2.5 years ago and we lost all our fish......would love to avoid that again.

As long as you don't have multiple days with snow cover on top of ice you should be good. I worked at the Auburn Fisheries station and on several occasions we had to break the ice to be able to seine fish.

I suggest you get an auger, a little hut, and copious amounts of whiskey, then pull them out one by one. Just to be safe.

No reason to expect turnover from a freeze. Might happen in the spring once things start to warm up.

I don't expect that, just pointing out we already lost all our fish recently.

Have dip net, will travel, although I'm already in Hallettsville, if you don't want all those fish to go to waste.
Seriously though, I think your tank should be fine.

Surface freezing won't hurt anything. 15 feet is really deep. Probably why you're getting turnover.

You should put in a solar aerator this spring. It will help out with turnover problems. I've got one in my pond.

There's like a foot of ice under two feet of snow on my pond. The fish are FINE.

You should not lose anything. Their metabolism will slow way down and they will be ok.
We have land in southern Missouri and the lake is about 5 acres and it freezes over regularly in winter. Have catfish, baitfish, perch and bass. They are always ok.

Your tank will be fine, I'm from Hallettsville, and have a tank I've been managing for bass for a while now, and a hard freeze shouldn't do anything appreciable to your tank. I've never seen a fish kill in the area from a freeze my entire life. If anything, it'll knock back any weeds that may have been starting to establish themselves, such as the primrose I usually have to spot treat each year.

As people have mentioned, a turnover usually results from the sudden mixing of anoxic layers of a pond/tank/lake that can occur in the spring from a sudden rain shower (mixing of warm and cold water layers).

However, if you had tilapia in your tank, that is a whole other situation. I stocked tilapia a couple years ago, and they made it through last winter, and I've already had a hard kill with them this fall/winter, and now this will fully finish them, so I'll be needing to restock them.

You mind me asking what general direction from Hallettsville you are? My family, and now my place, are all north of town in the areas of Appelt Hill, Kinkler, and Praha (more Flatonia/Schulenburg obviously).

Also, when you say "cats" do you mean channel catfish, or did you get the humpback blues from Henneke?

There will be some serious trout and red fish kills this week, those big some *****es will be floating everywhere in the bays ... not gonna be good if you go out Wed or Thur.. fish kills happen in weather like this, no way to stop it

My place is about 2 miles southeast of Sublime. I got hybrid blues from Henneke.

Kind of the Texas version of the Mobile Bay Jubilee?

That is all potentially true, but we are talking about freshwater species that range from Texas all the way to the Canadian border......so yes, the reds and specks might get hammered, but this was about a way different scenario. Fish kills in the context of the original OP are not very likely.

Not even the turtles will die under the ice.
