Could potentially get some 100 year record cold Friday-Tuesday state-wide. Weather models are bouncing all over the place - should be interesting to see how the electric renewable grid performs.

Anyone have a list of things to do on Texas homes during hard freezes like this they can post for the rest of us that grew up up north where we didn't worry about such things?

Thanks

On December 18, 1983, one of the severest Arctic cold snaps in modern day plunged into Texas. The mercury dipped below freezing at 7:00 am on December 18th and remained below freezing until 2:00 pm, December 30th, for a record of 295 consecutive hours of freezing/subfreezing temperatures. This of course made December 1983 the coldest December on record for Dallas/Fort Worth with an average monthly temperature of 34.8F. This is 12.1F below normal for the month and 4F colder than any other cold December of record. The coldest temperatures recorded during this period was 5F on December 22, 1983.

The area experienced a series of Arctic cold fronts beginning on the 15th, 18th, 21st, 24th, and 28th. The Arctic front on the 18th was the most significant. Cloud cover played a role in insolating the area, combined with a very low sun angle so close to the solstice, inhibiting any warming, and allowing the mercury to stay below freezing for several days. The cloud cover also kept temperatures from totally bottoming out, as had skies cleared totally, temperatures likely would have fallen below zero (in fact, Glen Rose, Tx did on the 30th with a low of -2F). Therefore, this cold snap did not bring DFW its coldest low temperatures for December.

That happened a few years later for DFW in December 1989, during another historic cold snap. The coldest temperature recorded was -1F during 1989. However, from the 22nd through the 25th of 1983, the high temperatures failed to rise above 19F with the coldest high reported on Christmas Eve of 13F. This was the second coldest high temperature in DFW weather recorded history. This cold snap brought us 5 daily low temperature records that still stand to this day, and 6 daily high maximum low temperature records. Behind the Arctic front on the 24th, DFW set its all time highest barometric pressure of 31.06 inHg. The cold spell was preceded by a significant winter storm on the 15th and 16th of the month that brought a snowpack to North Texas, which aided in the severity of the cold. Many sites still had snow on the ground by the end of the month. Officially, DFW Airport reported two inches of snow with this event.

The deep freeze reached all the way into Northern Mexico, with severe freezes into the Lower Rio Grande Valley causing tens of millions of dollars worth of damage to the agriculture and farming industries. Thirteen people statewide, six in North Texas alone, were said to have lost their lives due to the cold. $1.5 million dollars damage was done to city pipes in North Texas alone, not including damage to homes and businesses from busted pipes. It was estimated that the damage to agriculture in North Texas was around $50 million.

I remember that cold snap and the snow in 1983 from when I was a kid. I was 6 years old for that one.

A fishing guide that I'm buddies with and who is about 15 years older than I am tells the story that he, his brother, and dad were duck hunting in the marsh on the north side of West Bay (not far from Bayou Vista). The front hit so hard and so cold that between the time they set their dekes and the time they decided to call it so much water had been pushed out of the marsh that their dekes were no longer floating but sitting high on top of the mud and all the water had gone out. And that it had gotten so cold so fast that the mud started to freeze when they were picking up to leave.

I have seen zero guidance come out of ERCOT for this event. Been very quiet internal to our company as well. February 2011 sticks in my head and I don't want a repeat of that. Below freezing for 48+ hours or more around Dallas will impact the entire system.

I remember 1983. Our pond froze over (outside of Houston), and all our pipes busted. The ice was so thick we could walk on it. Probably not the smartest thing to do.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

The good thing is since it's happening on a weekend there should be less load and strain on the grid. We aren't too concerned about it, but with freezing precipitation, I'm sure there will be plenty of downed lines and tree branches breaking all over the state. We are taking extra precautions though and getting extra resources on standby just in case.

And remember that when your lights go out, check your main break and try resetting it FIRST and then call your electric company. I'm amazed how many people crank up their heaters and 19 appliances and don't think that could trip their main.

I remember that '83 freeze very well.
Was absolutely frigid.
The article posted above mentioned the '89 freeze and the damage it did in the valley, but the '83 freeze is the one that nuked damn near every palm down there. They were a sad sight for many years after that.

I have vivid memories of 1983 - an orange orchard that was 100% wiped out and is still bare ground today, and my brother and I getting into a fight mopping up the house - we had been out of town when it hit, and had a lot of water damage.

I'm not sure about 'record breaking.' The forecast shows lows in the 20's and the highs getting well above freezing every day. Nothing even close to the December '83 freeze.

We drove back into town from a ski trip on Christmas day 1983. We drove all the way back from Crested Butte in a van with a huge pile of snow on top. The snow never melted all the way home and was still there the day after Christmas when we woke up. I was the first one into the shower when we got home and was just finishing loading up my hair with shampoo when my sister started pounding on the door yelling at me to turn the water off because a pipe in the attic had burst over the desk out in the den. I got to dry off with shampoo still all over me, put my warm clothes back on and spend the next 2 hours upstairs in the attic with my dad repairing the broken line.

I hope things don't turn out like 1983, because the fish kill in the bay was huge and the effects of it were seen on the bays for decades afterwards.

I'm worried about my 40-foot tall Mexican fan palms. One within striking distance of the house. I lost two the last hard freeze.

The Queen Ann palms are a goner.

Actually, there were massive fish kills all the way down to the Lower Laguna Madre in '83. Specks took it the worst. '89 took its share too.

The southern part of Lake Waco froze over in 1983. I remember watching people walk across, some idiot even tried to drive his truck across. Even as a 12 year old, I knew everyone one the ice were incredibly stupid.

Not a whole lot to do to the house - wrap any exterior pipes in insulation. If it gets to where it will be below freezing for an extended period of time - 3 or more days in a row - open exterior faucets to a drip to keep water flowing so it won't freeze up on you.

Interior - meh, you'll be running a heater and you'll be fine. Even piping in your attic will be insulated enough to not worry about it. We don't get cold snaps that last long enough in Texas generally to worry about long term protection of pipe.

I remember both 83 and 89 well.

In '83 I was driving home from my first semester at tu and a cop pulled me over and told me I had one headlight out ;and that he was going to have to give me a ticket. I told him I didn't understand how that could be. So we got out and looked at the headlight together. It had been below freezing for many days. Inside the headlight was a bird (I think it was actually a meadowlark) dead, but perfectly preserved and staring back at both of us like a fist in an aquarium...it was frozen solid inside my headlight. Officer said he had never seen anything like it. I just shook my head in disbelief.

His body entered the headlight on on side with no cracks in the glass....only a small hole. And there he was on the other side like a fish looking out of an aquarium. We both laughed, he didn't give me a ticket and gave me his card to give to any other officer that stopped me on my way home and if I was stopped to show them the his card and tell them the deal......and that I was going to replace it the next day.

In '89 I was rushing from Dallas to Texarkana area for my first niece's birth. Drove over Lake of the Pines and it was frozen solid on top with no sight of any water......still think it's neat to see north Texas lakes completely frozen over.

Don't forget about sprinkler systems...probably don't need to blow the lines out, but you might want to take a look at the valve box.

My lease is Young and it's projected to 80 plus consecutive hours of below freezing temps.

Other than battery life, what impact would the cold have on our game cameras? Some are internet connected.

Depends on their quality, for a decent quality nothing since a lot are rated to -40F/C

1983 I drove with my Dad after graduating fro A&M down to Corpus Christi to get a new apartment for my first job out of college. There was ice floating in CC bay while we were there. That was the coldest I've ever been.

1983 Campbellton Texas. After days of making sure cattle had water and other issues, my 4 year old brother and I decided to do some "Ice skating" on a tank behind the house. I was 13, and should have known better. He fell through the ice about 4 ft from the bank. I was able to get him out quickly and we never told Mom and Dad about that one! Damn cold.

Yeah, our wheels are starting to spin here. Lots of cancelled maintenance on resources and cancelled jobs for line crews for the weekend through Tuesday. Seems like the forecasts are starting to firm up. We are hopefully going to just get snow and no ice. Still concerned about resource restraints for prolonged cold.

I was part of the ERCOT lessons learned for resource protection and planning after the 2011 event. Hopefully, those practices pay off and we do not have the frequency sympathetic trips that we had during that event.

First time I ever got to walk across frozen ice over a big ditch. My parents had a pipe bust in '83

I remember 89 because we tried to deliver charity donations to a soup kitchen in downtown Houston in an econoline van and every intersection and stop was white knuckle.
