Just found out I (well through my wife) have inherited a Winchester Model 100 Semi-Automatic rifle with scope. As I understand it, this model was in production from only around 1961 to 1973. This particular model is the .284 Winchester caliber.

I'm a relative newbie to guns outside of the old 30-30 Winchester that was all I ever knew. Is this gun worth keeping? Can one even find .284 Winchester cartridges these days?

Worth keeping? I think so. If people only kept guns they could find ammo for, no one would have a firearm right now.

It will be really hard to find ammo at any point. You could consider having it rechambered.

Collectible. Hang on to it.

.284 is pretty easy to find in normal times.

I just looked and they are selling/asking for more than I would have guessed on gun broker

For me any gun you inherit is worth keeping.

if your shooting experience is only a 30-30, be aware the 284win has about the recoil of a 30-06 so it will have significantly more Kick

30-30 with 150grain bullet @ 2390fps will generate 10.6 ftlbs

30-06 with 150grain bullet around 17.6 ftlbs

284 win with 150grain bullet @2850fps generates 17.4 ftlbs

Heck yeah. .284 Winchester can be modified into 7.5 mm Swiss.

Absolutely worth keeping. No question about it.

I shot my first deer at age 8 with a model 100 .308 that I later inherited. Great gun with very little recoil. I still have the same red field 4x scope on it. iirc there was a firing pin recall and if it's been done the barrell will be stamped. Great classic shooter. Keep it.

And I'm pretty sure I saw some boxes of .284 in a local store a few weeks ago.

My Dads got one in .308 that was my Grandads. My Dad scoped it and worked up a bunch of different reloads for it. Was not accurate what so ever.
