Don't do the River road in the park. 7 hours of hard driving, no views of the River. Wish I would of known those two things before doing it.

I disagree. It's route through some nice scenery and the stop for Mariscal Mine is always worth it.

The hike up to the top of the quicksilver mine was awesome.

Not exactly true The road goes down to the river closer to the Castolon end.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. We had two full days in the park Monday and Tuesday with the high 82&85. Perfect as it was in the 40s mornings. Santa Elena Canyon, Window, and Balanced Rock were our favorites. Staying in Marathon one night on the way helped break up the 10 hour drive from Houston. Then we went thru Marfa and Presidio as suggested and really glad we did the drive between Presidio and Lajitas. Awesome views. Took a different route home Terlingua to Alpine and then Junction off I 10 down to Mason. 1,780 miles later made it home. Highly recommend a trip to Big Bend in the winter.

Lajitas golf resort. It was nice and the restaurant/bar there were great.

We've stayed at that hotel that's part of the starlight before. It's simple but nice enough. These little bar isn't bad. We happened to catch them holding their employee and friends Xmas party once, and that was great fun. Live music and free booze.
I've also stopped there for a burger and to watch an Aggie game at the only bar with satellite TV in town (at the time). I like camping at the cottonwood campground in cool weather, but in the summer it is humid and hot down there.
