You may be able to re use the section of wire that comes from the power meter on your exterior wall through your wall and into the breaker box. I don't see any scenario where you would be flowing generator power through the overhead lines. Those don't belong to you I don't believe.

You have to have generator feed into the transfer switch and utility feed (after the meter) into the transfer switch. If you do this outside, the wire penetrating the wall may be reused going from the new transfer switch to the breaker, just depending on if it's long enough

Signed my mom up for a Generac 24KW, natural gas powered unit to run the whole house, though probably can't run 100% load, such as dryer and oven at once.

With transfer switch and installation, about $9,700.

Been thinking about a generator a lot. Lost power twice this year for two days and five days due to hurricanes. I'd like the whole house generator, but just can't talk myself into the cost. I'm probably going to get a portable generator and have an electrician install a transfer switch with a 30 Amp plug.

Get you a large portable and a 50amp connection.

The only point to go larger than 7-8k watts would be if it could run my central ac. Then the cost gets kind of crazy.

I've got a 40kw NG Generac. It was here, I wouldn't have paid to install. It runs EVERYTHING at the same time.

The maintenance isn't so bad. Auto runs once a week to stay fresh and charge the battery. Yearly maintenance and a new battery just like your car.

But I was reading the UG and in an actual long term without power event you're supposed to be changing oil like every 48hrs...that's kinda a pita.
