Heading down there as a Christmas present for the wife. Will be leaving around 10 and wanted to eat at a good local place along the way. Will probably take 67-281-84-16. Any thoughts?

Bluebonnet Cafe in Marble Falls
River City Grill in Marble Falls. Decent food, but nice view.
Pecan Street Brewing in Johnson City - scratch that, they are closed until Saturday
Bryan's on 290 looks to be open. Johnson City. Outstanding food, but not cheap. Worth every penny though. This would by my pick.

+1 for Coffee Cup in Hico or Paynes BBQ shack in Burnet is a slight detour. Good brisket but might not be open.
cutting over on 20 to hit Mary's in Strawn then taking 281 south vs 67 to 281
Coopers in Llano
Bear King Brewery in Marble Falls has some good food and beer with a nice patio. As with any restaurant, I'd call ahead and make sure they aren't to-go only (and still open).
+1 for Koffee Kup in Hico. Just drove from Fredericksburg to DFW today. That's typically our dinner spot on our way up. Let us know what else you find. Not a lot of options on the route I take.
Po Campo bbq in Hico is outstanding.

I will second the post on Coopers BBQ in Llano. You should be taking Hwy 281 to Hwy 27 in Burnett then to Llano then 16 to Fredericksburg. I travel for a living and live just outside Fredericksburg. I always plan my trips to stop at Coopers.
As far as Bluebonnet Cafe, preorder a pie and bring it with you. They are absolutely worth a stop.

Badu 1891 & Hungry Hunter in Llano
Eaten at the Llano Coopers many times and our group switched to an off & on BBQ stand on the north side of town - llano Coopers not quite as good as the original

Hico: Chop House (killer chicken fried steak)
Johnson City: Bryan's (everything on the menu)
Marble Falls: Bluebonnet (breakfast - Spanish omlet is great. Everything else is good but not super.)

Elk, Venison, Duck, Redfish - good stuff!
Not on the way but once in Fredericksburg there is Hondo's that pretty good. If looking for a nice sit down, Ottos is really good.
Don't forget bluebonnet cafe is cash only.

Not leaving until the 1st. Sorry for the confusion. She's excited to get away from the kids for a few days and has actually wanted to try Koffee Kup Kafe. Probably hit another on the way back. Maybe Coopers.

This place is great. Not exactly real German food but really good.
Go to Eve's in Lampasas. Good timing for lunch and they've got great food plus great pie. Plus beer.
Strawn is not on the way but that would be a good option if headed to Abilene. But you wouldn't be getting lucky if you were taking her there.

So far so good! Little snow on the ground out here which made the drive even better.
