Damn, 2020 is still a beat down. My grandpa's favorite Grand Ole Opry singer.
" Is Anyone Going to San Antone" a great song that hits home for many.

Damn. The pride of Sledge, MS.

Anyone remember Jerry Clower's joke (probably should ask if anyone remembers Jerry Clower) where he talks about getting off an airplane and someone says "I know you, I know you...."

and the punch line is.. "YOU'RE CHARLIE PRIDE!"

Moutain of Love.

RIP Charley. One of my Papa's favorites. Hearing his music has always been special to me because of it

Wow, just watched him on one of the country music award shows and marveled at how good he still sounded and looked at 86.

Dammit, 2020 gets another one. It seems like every time we went to the Rodeo in San Antonio when I was a kid we either saw Rex Allen Sr. or Charley Pride. I've seen Charley live several times at venues other that the San Antonio Rodeo and he always sounded GREAT, even in his later years. He will be missed.

Major bummer. I used to get him his golf clubs the summer after my freshman year at A&M when I worked in the bag room at Brookhaven Country Club where we was a member. He was always so friendly. RIP.

2020 has been Hell on country music. Joe Diffie, Kenny Rogers, John Prine, Justin Townes Earle, Charlie Daniels, Jerry Jeff Walker, Harold Reid, Mac Davis, Johnny Bush, Billy Joe Shaver, Bill Mack (wrote Blue), Larry Johnson (co-wrote Don't take the girl), Jimmy Capps (grand Ole Opry house band member) Paul English (willie's drummer), Ed Setser (wrote Seven Spanish Angles, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band members Chris Darrow and Bill McEuen, and Troy James (wrote People are Crazy and I'm Pretty Good at Drinking Beer). Hal Ketchum, Hank Jr.'s daughter died. Reba, Martina McBride, and Jo Dee Messina all lost their mothers in 2020. There's an awful lot of good country music in Heaven just from this year.

Add another one to the list; RIP Charley Pride

Wrong Brookhaven Country Club. Charley was born in the Delta (Sledge), not in South MS.

I got to see him perform at G. Rollie back in '78 the night before we played the Memphis Tigers at Kyle. I believe his son was on the Memphis team at the time.

He put on a great show, and had tons of energy.

Obviously, he had a great-sounding powerful and instantly identifiable voice, and sold a helluvalot of records in his day to folks that some might write off as racist hicks. I know I sure bought and enjoyed his recordings.

I never have figured out why more black artists didn't enter country music back then. Charley, of course, was in a league of his own, but I really enjoyed Stoney Edwards' and Big Al Downing's country records as well.

Since we're posting our favorites, here's a Merle Haggard composition that Charley took to #1 in 1973 and that has a great arrangement to accompany Charley's great voice.

A Shoulder to Cry On

That was a great evening at G. Rollie ... Charley was looking good that night ... despite the Aggieland misspelling ...

One of my truly favorite musicians of all time. I used to listen to his records on my Opa's phonograph when I was a child. He was the last musician I saw in concert (in 2016 at Arlington Music Hall). My wife and I were the youngest people in the crowd; it was so much fun.

I was at that concert as well. My future wife came to the game and we went to see him. He did a great show.

The virus does what nature tells it to, or what it was engineered to to. Either way, the ChiComs (Rush Limbaugh speak for Chinese Communists) are responsible for either case for letting it loose on the world, as they could have prevented the spread but let people fly all over the world from Wuhan, after they had prohibited such travel within their country. So.....

F CHINA.

They are responsible for every stinking sickness, disability, and death.

RIP Charley.
