Thinking of getting a break barrel pellet rifle with scope to shoot at hogs to keep them away from the feeder while deer hunting. Has anyone done this? Any suggestions on what to buy?

The nicer gammo ones should work. Might need something that shoots 1100 FPS for it to reach out and touch a hog.

Also, the 22 caliber ones probably travel further than .17

This is the answer.

At least where I hunt- shooting a pellet gun would run off more deer than hogs do.

I have a Benjamin Marauder. It is not a break pellet rifle. It is a compressed air and uses a hand pump. It is .25 cal and could have about the same punch as a 22LR. I have killed probably 100 squirrels and racoons with it.

Umerex make big bore air rifles that would work

I just use this and it's just as quiet.

I've been intrigued by these, but only having a few shots worth of gas (with each subsequent shot getting slower) and needing to either get the compressor + tank or go to a scuba shop before every use is an annoying barrier.

You can also buy a hand pump for PCP airguns too. These pumps look and operate like the pumps used for high-pressure bicycle tires, but they can go up to 3k psi (200 bar). Certainly a 3k SCUBA tank or 4.5k cf tank is easier to use, but a manual pump frees you from the need for electricity, and has a lot lower setup cost.

Just keep in mind that large-bore air rifles use a tremendous amount of air per shot, which means the owner will be doing a lot of pumping on range day.

I have a pump. I get 10 shots with my air rifle. Typically takes 5mins to fill the gun with the hand pump.

In the blind with my slingshot as we speak. It's the way to go.

How far can you reach out and touch one with that slingshot?

Carl I actually just bought that exact combo of slingshot and ammo.

I think pigman did a show where he or his dad killed one with a .177 or .22 pellet rifle by hitting on a thin spot on the skull. They were a lot closer than standard deer box to feeder range though.

Careful with 'dem slingshots.

I have a Browning TBolt .22 that has the Sparrow suppressor...shooting CCI 1050 40gr subsonic loads at 100 yds zero which is where my feeders are at. We shot a raccoon with an 8 point buck standing about 10 feet from it. You could here the shot hit the coon and the deer moved off about 10 feet and looked around and came right back to the corn. It is AMAZINGLY quiet and accurate.
