OB:

I am having a vertically cracked molar extracted tomorrow with a bone graft done in preparation of an implant, of a molar at a later date.

I had plans to hunt this weekend.

Is this something that I should avoid with the bone graft? It is on the opposite side of my cheek weld with the gun. Percocet is the painkill drug "for evenings" they are going to prescribe. I have had other surgeries with things like Hydrocodone, which I took little of or not at all (a couple was OK, but don't care for the feeling of taking them back to back). Don't care for narcotic painkillers.

Does anyone on the OB have experience with two day out hunting with rifles after this type of oral surgery? Would the recommendation with the bone graft be to not fire a rifle? I have the "days out" sheet given to me, but it is "dont bend over and handle large weights, etc.". Obviously does not cover recoil, etc.

OB experience?

If by hunting, you mean sitting in a blind and shooting a couple of times but otherwise acting mostly responsible all weekend then I would give you clearance. If it means drinking beer all weekend acting crazy and chasing hogs around in your Polaris, I would say it's a non-go for me.

Not medical advice:

That depends entirely on how big the buck is that you're shooting... I'd gladly knock out a tooth, part of my jaw bone, etc., if it meant shooting a big ole bruiser.

Good luck! Hope your recovery goes well!

So the kawasaki mule guys would be okay, cause they can't go fast?

Sounds expensive and painful. I'd be inclined to sit it out if it were me. I ended up at the dentist today too. Bit down on a steel pellet on some duck gumbo. Thankfully I didn't crack a tooth.

I had an oral bone graft once...they pack little sand like bone particles in there then sew your gum over it. The fewer particles you lose the better off it turns out. First couple weeks are a pita.

I'd be sitting in a recliner all weekend if it was me (or a cozy blind). Find some youngster to do the hard stuff if you get one.

Had this done at the tail end of '18. They knocked me out to do it, as I expect your doc will. Based on that alone, I'd stay home and rest.

I had bone grafts done in preparation for implants while I was stationed at Fort Sill. Doc told me don't get blood pumping for 14 days. I hunted on day 12 or so, shot a doe and could feel my heart pounding in the stitches in my mouth when I was loading her up. Seemed fine and don't think it did any real damage as I have implants now and they haven't fallen out of my head. Wasn't real comfortable though. I would definitely ask the doc, a lot of that healing is dependent on small capillary networks providing blood flow to the site, which is why they don't want you getting your blood pumping too hard.

Had a tooth removed and bone graft performed earlier this year.
As others have said, no reason you can't sit in a blind and shoot a rifle once or twice.
How far away is the hunting place? Can you rest up Friday and only hunt Saturday and Sunday? Maybe ride up there instead driving.

Avoid heavy activity. You need to heal. Do you have people to help you gut, hang, and quarter a deer? Lift ice chests, etc?

The diet restrictions were pretty serious so make sure you have the right food on hand. Don't forget your antibiotics.

Once you take all that into account it may not be worth it

Coming from someone w/ professional bias ...

Honestly, you likely wont feel like you want to hunt 1 day after getting this done... but no reason you couldn't sit in the blind I suppose and I don't think a single recoil would hurt. Concerns for me are 1) Not sure you want to operate a firearm and/or heavy machinery whilst on pain medication and 2) I would strongly advise to avoid strenuous activity such as dragging and quartering a deer.
Also, Day 1 after an extraction/bone graft is far different than Day 12 as mentioned above.

If it were me, I'd sit it out.

HOWEVER: If there's a huge bruiser w/ high likelihood of being there and this is one of your only weekends to hunt bring someone to do all your dirty work for you- and I wouldn't try and trek too far from the stand and have someone drop you off close and pick you up

Lastly, As stated above, your diet will be pretty restricted and you probably will not feel 100%, so it won't be your typical deer camp experience... being around the fire slammin back cold ones eating steaks with the buddies...

Based on my experience they'd be in worse shape because the suspension on the Mule (at least the one that we have) will rattle your teeth loose on anything rougher than a dirt road.

My professional dental opinion is to sit it out at home and take it easy. At the end of the day, why go through with the procedure and then put yourself in a higher risk category of failure?

I'm not a dentist but have had this procedure. Listen to these dentists. At day two, I had swelling and could feel the pulling on stitches. Moving around getting the blood pumping caused me to be spitting blood. At day two you'll still be packing gauze and waking up with chunks of clotted blood that look like little pieces of liver. Can't image huffing it on a hunt and shooting with that going on.

FINALLY.... someone has the correct answer!

DO NOT SMOKE or dip/chew
DO NOT drink carbonated drinks AT ALL
AVOID alcohol
Soft diet (on that side especially)
You should NOT (Seriously....NEVER EVER) use narcotics with guns!
*take 3 Advil and 1 Tylenol TOGETHER every 4 hours for pain. It WORKS!!!
For extra protection, you can bite down on some of the take home guaze (moistened) when you take the shot. If you put it in dry, it "could" stick to or harm your stiches

Before we went to Zambia I had a full dental rehab - all my teeth are crowns. Two solid days in the dental chair.

When we were home last year I was tying some leaders for my anticipated fishing trip to fish for tiger fish on the Zambezi. On one of the leaders I had a tag end in my mouth to bite down and pull it tight. As I pulled, I heard and felt a crack. Is sheared of a crown on a back molar.

Use better judgment than I did.

DO NOT SMOKE or dip/chew. I planned in a medium cigar to watch the football games tomorrow night and Sat. and drink a few beers. Looks like I took my last needed narc pain med except for ibuprofen this evening. Almost no apparent swelling, and bleeding is very minor now. Why no cigar, as long as it has a light draw? And I have 1 to 2 dips/per day after dinner in the evenings. If I use the rinse provided, what would be the issue here? tooth extracted was a second to rear molar. Will look again, but don't think this is even referenced on doctors orders.
DO NOT drink carbonated drinks AT ALL. Yes, I can get this for sure, even if not listed on the doctors orders.
AVOID alcohol. The only reference to alcohol mentioned was due to narc pain meds, which should be well out of my system by then. I am well aware of the interaction, and would want to avoid, but why if no pain meds?
Soft diet (on that side especially). Oh yes.
You should NOT (Seriously....NEVER EVER) use narcotics with guns! Agree strongly.
*take 3 Advil and 1 Tylenol TOGETHER every 4 hours for pain. It WORKS!!! Will consider.
For extra protection, you can bite down on some of the take home guaze (moistened) when you take the shot. If you put it in dry, it "could" stick to or harm your stiches. Wont be happening this weekend.
OK, since lease is muddy (known after the rains the last several days in the area), will not be taking a chance based on the possibility of getting a truck stuck. It would be just two of us and one truck.

However see my comments/questions in bold above. If somebody could expand on the tobacco and alcohol questions, it would be appreciated.

TIA OB for the responses already and to expansion on the points/questions here.

Alcohol is a blood thinner. Also, Advil is a blood thinner. Will increase risk of bleeding, One beer isn't likely going to do much. Also, Tylenol+alcohol=can do liver damage even for a young healthy liver (just never know).

Smoking a cigar is a terrible idea. Not only does the "sucking" of the draw create pressure that may dislodge the clot and cause a dry socket , the nicotine is a vasoconstrictor that can inhibit healing.

* If you didn't like the Norcos, you will definitely not like Percosets. Do not take them on an empty stomach.

* Another don't - don't use a straw to drink

Guess it depends on the person. I don't tolerate hydrocodone very well but have no problems at all with oxycodone. On the other parallel side, I get pretty ill on morphine but tolerate hydromorphone well. Maybe I just like the high end stuff!! The morphine could be psychological - it's what our medic kept giving me while pinned down for almost 18 hours after I'd taken an AK-47 round before it was safe for a chopper evac. I will admit to using narcotics and guns at the same time.

That would qualify as an acceptable use of a firearm while using narcotics.

I had this done earlier this year, cracked molar as well. They yanked the tooth, did the bone graft, gave me my prescription, and went back to work. I wasn't put under though, just given a local.

Like others said, stick to soft foods for a little while and try your best to not chew with that side and you will be fine. The only bad thing was they said I couldn't drink beer for about a week or so
