Just depends what he wants. A show steer from a local family will be on a good feed program which includes a super high quality show feed, additional things mixed in the show feed like Flaxseed. Also show steers are fed in conjunction with the show feed, high quality hay such as coastal & sorghum(Haygrazer) in forms of round bales or square bales. I also turn my show steers out at night in the pasture pens to graze on native grass which is very common thing to do.
These show cattle are intensely cared for across the board in such things like stalls, keeping them cool during the Hot months in Texas using fans, misting systems, Portacool's, even having A/C cool facility. They are rinsed out and blown out at least twice a day, washed at least once a week or as needed, worked and walked at least twice a day and so forth.
These show steers have a pampered life style basically and countless hours of hard work go into it. The other thing is a show steer is going to have better genetics and superior marbling, flavor, taste and juiciness compared to a grass fed steer.
