If you're doing hand planes and chisels, look into the Veritas honing guide (made for chisels) and the scary sharp system from Taylor Toolworks. The scary sharp system uses special lapping sheets (essentially sandpaper, but not the stuff you find in the painting aisle) applied over float glass and goes up to 60,000 grit, which is finer than stropping compound. The lapping sheets last quite awhile and are pretty cheap to replace.
