Is it too early to transplant a young 6' tall pecan tree? I want to transplant it to my property, but I won't be ready to do that until late next year after the lot is cleared and my house is built. The plan would be to transplant it into a pot in the interim.

Obviously it would be ideal to transplant only once from point A to point B without the potting phase. And the ideal time is later in the dormant season (Jan/Feb) but it is a now or never situation and I don't want pass up the opportunity if it is a viable option to do it now.

They have deep tap roots. It may be difficult to do.

I have transplanted an Arizona/River Walnut Juglans major with a cut tap root. I let the root soak in root stimulator overnight before planting and it barely made it through the first year but has done well this year and it looks like it is gonna stick.

Thanks. Didn't know about the long tap root. Well I could plant it in the ground at my parents house and avoid the pot. Then I can transplant it properly next dormant season.

They're pretty resilient trees. We had one we transplanted when I was a kid from my grandparent's. It was 3 feet tall or so. Every year, the horse would eat it down to the stem, but it would grow back. It of course never got too tall.

A similar thread here recently pointed out Nativ nurseries. It's interesting that they grow their pecans so they don't have that large tap root. I imagine that helps with planting, but I wonder if that impacts the tree in the long run as it won't have that deep tap root to grow down in search of moisture.

Interesting research saying you should prune the root system when transplanting pecans. I never would have thought that.

Plant a new one, unless it's less than your thumb in diameter.

At some point in time, it will pass up the transplanted one.

If you're dead set on this tree, find someone with a tree spade.
