Mad Island WMA. Damnit.

Does anyone have experience with teal/duck hunting the area? On my way to fish lately I have been driving past the road sign to this wma.

I looked at the site and it reads as if a drawing is done for spots based on folks lined up and it might be weekends only. It also seems like it is walk-in only.

I would be interested in hunting but scouting the site beforehand might be hard given my location. Are the marked spots accessible for a first timer?

Yeah you have to show up by 4:30am I believe and the biologist will hand you a cow tag at the entrance. When the biologist hands the tags out to everybody in line he comes back to the ranger station and draws tags randomly.

Technically you can show up last and be the first one to be drawn to pick a stand. It used to be first come first serve but people were camping in their trucks the night before to get the best spots. It got ridiculous.

Teal hunting is normally pretty good, but this time of year you will be fighting mosquitos and alligators. I've hunted that area for many years and typically wait until it's 70 degrees or less before I duck hunt down there.
