Ok...almost back to College Station!
My good friend and I took our 2nd grade boys with us from CS to Dalhart on Friday after work.
We made it in about 1:30am. Opening day was Saturday. We were up and out the door at 6:45am. The property we were hunting was about 40 miles north of Dalhart, literally on the border with Oklahoma. OnX really came in handy to double check we weren't shooting across state lines!
We had two tags...the plan was for my friend's boy to get his first goat and me to get my first as well. As expected the north wind was tough all morning on Saturday. We saw a handful of pronghorns but had trouble getting within 800 yards of them. After lunch we found a buck and doe bedded down at 600 yards. My friend and his boy started their stalk, trying to get within 200-300 yards. The goats were very curious and a little concerned about them. Each time they got to about 500 yards the animals would slowly move another hundred yards away. This went on for nearly 30 minutes...luckily this particular second grader is a great shot and routinely gets to practice shooting at long distances. Dad helped him get set up, they ranged for 510 yards, made adjustments, and let it rip. Nailed it perfectly in the front shoulder! The goat took a few steps and got the ground dead. To top it off, he had an audience watching the whole thing...the Game Warden plane flew back and forth over us during the entire stalk. The local warden was waiting in his truck for us when we got back to the county road. We had a great, positive experience with him and my Lone Star Law loving 8 year old was star struck!
On Sunday morning I had my much less exciting turn. We found a buck bedded down at 320 yards. I set up and waited for him to get up. He walked around for a few minutes before he got broad side. I made the shot and dropped him without drama...thankfully. We got everything quartered and cleaned and ended our day letting the boys shoot some prairie dogs before heading home. We had a really fun 36 hours bookended by a lot of driving!
