Just seeing if anyone has any experience with a private land antelope hunt up in the Panhandle?

I'm sure I am most likely too late for a 2020 hunt, but might be interested in looking into something for 2021.

Thanks!

Texas Parks & Wildlife has an online list of landowners who have been issued pronghorn permits. Their names, counties, and phone numbers are on the list. The list is from 2019-20, but it has been my experience that the same properties get permits each year.

There used to be a guy on here that went by the handle Chocolatelabs. He always had connections with different landowners who had pronghorn permits. You might look him up and see if he knows of anything.

That's right! He has posted in the last week on other threads so hopefully this one catches his attention.

This did catch my attention.

From biologist the pronghorn numbers are down and as such so are the tags.

I think I'm gonna get 5 tags but haven't heard from one landowner yet. Not sure yet.

All 5 are already spoken for so sorry.

If I hear of more I'll post here.

Landowner list is best place but you'll have to call a lot

Landowner lists exist in other state's too. A nice little drive outside of Texas can get you into lots of good, cheap hunting.

Which states are you referring to? Can you provide links to the lists?

Phone calls to game wardens and biologists can be hit or miss. Busy folks. But chamber of commerce offices...those can be gold mines.

Try the states where goats are plentiful.

I talked with one outfitter today that is booked through 2023!

This outfitter did have some NM pronghorn DIY hunts for $1800.

Wyoming Fish & Game has a landowner list. From some limited reading, most of the landowners are wanting hunters later in the season due to large numbers of migrating antelope on alfalfa and barley fields. Here's the link to the list: https://wgfd.wyo.gov/Public-Access/Hunter-Landowner-Assistance/Hunter-Landowner-Regions

Looks like you'd have to find leftover, OTC tags. I have no idea if that's doable, but I'd think if they've got that many antelope they'd make tags available.

Ended up tracking down a couple of landowner tags in Dallam County, just north of Dalhart. Leaving this afternoon, season opens tomorrow morning.

Hopefully I will be able to update this thread with a few pictures and a decent story to tell!

I was in Dalhart on Monday. There were quite a few speed goats roaming around. Good luck

If I am hunting speed goats it's in Wyoming. They have more goats than people. Spent a lot of time in Thunder basin grasslands. Huge populations and trophy class goats.

Out of curiosity, what kind of prices were you hearing back on the tags when inquiring? I'm assuming fully unguided? I have an idea to do this same kind of hunt here in the next few years. Something about a Texas pronghorn just seems really unique.

Ahh, the wily buck antelope. Speed goat of the plains. What a sporting critter. How will you ever get near enough to take a crack at one?

Come hunt them in SE Colorado. During late season the does take off if they see a truck 2 miles away.

I ended up paying $1600 for one tag from an outfitter/middle man. If I had been patient I probably could have saved a little and bought directly from a landowner next year...but I'm ready for an adventure to break up this COVID lameness!

They call it "semi-guided" but I'm not expecting anymore than being pointed in the right direction.

Tough, but really fun day of hunting today! Our group ended up filling one of our two tags late this afternoon. Hoping to fill mine tomorrow morning. Wind is supposed to be a little more manageable. Will post pics and details when we make it back home...goofy little critters!

Don't know exactly where they are in NM, but I was at the NRA Whittington Center about a month ago and saw an absolute stud goat chilling out next to the road. Zero F-Bombs were given. I took pictures of him and he slowly got up and meandered away.

The males are currently chasing skirt around the Colorado Springs area. A friend of mine took an Air Force cadet hunting last week and he got a very nice one near Peyton Colorado.

Son-in-law is big into hunting, and was a Zoomie. He and some friends rented a storage unit off campus to be able to legally store guns and ammo.

How messed up is that?

Ok...almost back to College Station!

My good friend and I took our 2nd grade boys with us from CS to Dalhart on Friday after work.

We made it in about 1:30am. Opening day was Saturday. We were up and out the door at 6:45am. The property we were hunting was about 40 miles north of Dalhart, literally on the border with Oklahoma. OnX really came in handy to double check we weren't shooting across state lines!

We had two tags...the plan was for my friend's boy to get his first goat and me to get my first as well. As expected the north wind was tough all morning on Saturday. We saw a handful of pronghorns but had trouble getting within 800 yards of them. After lunch we found a buck and doe bedded down at 600 yards. My friend and his boy started their stalk, trying to get within 200-300 yards. The goats were very curious and a little concerned about them. Each time they got to about 500 yards the animals would slowly move another hundred yards away. This went on for nearly 30 minutes...luckily this particular second grader is a great shot and routinely gets to practice shooting at long distances. Dad helped him get set up, they ranged for 510 yards, made adjustments, and let it rip. Nailed it perfectly in the front shoulder! The goat took a few steps and got the ground dead. To top it off, he had an audience watching the whole thing...the Game Warden plane flew back and forth over us during the entire stalk. The local warden was waiting in his truck for us when we got back to the county road. We had a great, positive experience with him and my Lone Star Law loving 8 year old was star struck!

On Sunday morning I had my much less exciting turn. We found a buck bedded down at 320 yards. I set up and waited for him to get up. He walked around for a few minutes before he got broad side. I made the shot and dropped him without drama...thankfully. We got everything quartered and cleaned and ended our day letting the boys shoot some prairie dogs before heading home. We had a really fun 36 hours bookended by a lot of driving!

We filled all four tags Saturday. This one (mine) was the smallest of the bunch.

Great report!

Sounds like you were in the area of the Rita Blanca National Grasslands. Interesting area. Pretty much the heart of the dust bowl.. Lots of private land in the area, but lots of NFS land, too. I knew an agronomist who worked the grasslands, he found .50 cal shell casings, as it was a gunnery range for the WWII base at Dalhart, and probably others.

Map of the grasslands, for those who care

Side note, I will be glad when we get rid of the haze from California fires. Though is does make for red, red, sunsets.

Yessir! The land we were hunting on bordered several parts of the Rita Blanca.

It has a very interesting history! We did some Googling about it on our way home!
