We're taking a family trip next week and staying on the west end of Galveston island. I'm thinking of dragging my 13' whaler down and doing some fishing in the mornings with my sons.

I used to fish that area some when I was still at A&M but that was a long time ago so any advice would be greatly appreciated. I do remember we used to have some luck in Titlum Tatlum bayou.

I'll have a 6 and 8 year old with me so no wading, we need to stay in the boat. I'm planning on using bait and like always when fishing with kids catching quantity is more important than quality.

I know of the boat ramps at the park by the bridge and the one where Ernies Too used to be. Are there any other to consider? Thanks

Try free shrimping the around the pier in Cold Pass. I would be hesitant to take that boat with kids into San Luis pass. Fish the drains in Titlem Tatlum.

Thanks. Yeah, I'm definitely not going out into SLP proper, looking to stay back in the bayous and grassy areas.

Fishing is tough right now due to the wind. We fished yesterday and caught 6 reds and 5 trout. That sounds like a lot but it was our guide's lowest catch in 2 weeks. I would recommend our guide but he's booked through 8/10. We fished with croaker as bait and skipjack as cut bait. Fish are there but you'll need a guide to put you on the fish. Sorry I'm not more help bit at least wanted to give you a current fishing update/report. I took my 9 and 11 year old out for the afternoon and they loved it for what that is worth. We fished the San Luis pass bridge and chocolate bay.

You'd probably have better luck and more fun in the surf right now. Dead shrimp should probably catch the kids a whiting at least. Plus it's not as hot.

Launch at the Brazoria Co. park and go west away from SLP. Cross Cold Pass and post up on a drop off in the channel with shrimp (live or dead) and your kids will catch more croaker, whiting, and piggy perch than they could want. If the tide is moving you'll probably catch some trout and maybe some drum, reds, or sheepies.

Anywhere along the drop off into the channel along Cold Pass will be good for the kiddos.

Several cuts and guts behind bird island, croaker is the bait of choice right now for limits of trout. Live shrimp is always a good choice. Cold pass can produce fish, but obviously everyone mentioned it, it sees a lot of pressure. You can drift the reefs in Xmas bay, the west shoreline of west bay, the rock wall on the north west side of west bay. The flats near Jamaica beach holds fish this time of year.

I second this. I was going to run down there to fish the surf yesterday morning but had something come up. This whole week looks like the surf will be pretty flat. A buddy caught the specs pretty good thing morning right at daylight on a top water.

If the wind holds, I am going to run down there Saturday.

I would agree, I fished a fly tournament in West Bay Saturday and found the Reds back up in the shallow marshes. For the kids though, I think this would be good.

Definitely- kids & grown-ups are going to get different advice.

Who did you fish with in the tournament? I was just getting back from getting my ass kicked by tarpon in FL and didn't fish it this year.

Anyway, different people are going to get different recs based on how they want to fish and what kind of boat they're running.

A buddy of mine (Justin). We ended up 5th with 54". Winning team caught an even 56". I think there were 11 teams that had greater than 50", which is pretty amazing considering how bad the weather was on Saturday.
