Are these native mixes viable options for turf grass lawns? We recently moved into a new home and have an acre+ lot. I've got bermuda sod down and it was well established across most of the yard. Over the last week it's been hit hard by the higher temps and blazing sun. We don't have any shade to speak of, and excessive watering really isn't my best option. We are not on municipal water.

Have any of y'all gone with a more native option for your yard? If so, what were the results? What steps did you take to get it established?

I'd love to learn from anyone who has taken this route and had success.

If you are near the metroples, go by the Bush Library and look at thier lawn. It is native and I personally like it. It obviously isn't a bright green golf course, but I think it looks better. Especially if you are paying the water bill. Curly mesquite also can work in the mix.

If you're going to go with buffalo grass, you'll probably want to nuke any other grass that you have. I went with sod in Leander, and it worked well for me. I kept about 5 to 6 inches long, and it kind of just laid over. My watering bill went down drastically.

If you have any shade, want to play on grass, or live east of 35 don't bother. Otherwise, yes Buffalo is good.

I looked back at my timeline. This is 42 days since germination. So 45 days since I planted seed. This was after its first mow. 4 inch height.

This was on a re-grade project. No previous grass to kill. I walk it 2x a day to hand pull weeds until it gets thick enough to choke things out. A few small spots of Bermuda (came in the dirt we brought in) get hand pulled as well. Let me know if you have any other questions. This is 50lb of Habiturf seed, followed the planting and watering instructions from DK seeds.

I have buffalo grass on parts of my property where I live and it seems to do really well. I have Bermuda on the yard around the house and it certainly is much thicker than the buffalo grass. The buffalo grass was for areas that are just too much to irrigate. All came up from seed at my house. I put down buffalo grass sod at my ranch house and I would say it's done ok considering it doesn't get much TLC out there. Weeds can be a problem. But I certainly think it's a viable option. I just ordered another 15 pounds of seed to cover about a half acre at my house where we do some baseball practice. Just waiting on some rain.
