The OB knows stuff so I was wondering if anyone has either used one of these log splitters or has experience with them. The concept looks good however there seem to be more negative reviews of the product when not looking on the product's website. I have really been interested in this but don't want to buy a piece of junk.

Thoughts?

I am out just based on the price and the fact ill still work my ass off. You can find solid used hydraulic log splitters for little more money than they're asking for a tpost driver log splitter.

I grew up splitting wood to heat the house up in the northeast. It still looks like too much work compared to renting or purchasing a hydraulic splitter.

It probably works but still looks like you would work just as hard as any other manual method. Rent a hydraulic splitter.

You can get a hydraulic splitter for the same price that will make your life a lot easier. Looks like that would take more time as well.

My recommendation is to get yourself a lady like in this video and she will figure out how to get it done.

I think it depends to a large degree on the type of wood you're splitting and how much. Loblolly pine, aspen, or any white-wood no problem. Live oak or post oak, forget it - you'ill work your butt off and that pile they show would take two weeks. Look on Craigs List and find a used hydraulic splitter or pick one up from Tractor Supply on sale.

my colleagues in Montana always said if you split your own wood, it warms you twice... Problem is, in Texas, you dont need to be warmed twice.

How much wood are you talking about splitting? Just some occasional firewood or a cord+?

Either way, that seems really high for what it is... If you wanted to try the concept without much investment, you might check out the simplified harbor freight version...

Otherwise, buy a hydraulic splitter (gas driven, don't need a tractor, could even look at the electric ones they have, no clue if they are anygood)

Why would you buy one when you already have one. Hefty girls get it done.

Spent three hours monday afternoon in my driveway swinging an axe on spools of oak. Split up a 60ft oak with relative ease. Helped it was cut to bbq pit length and not fireplace.

If you are splitting oak I wouldn't even think of messing with that. Hydraulic all the way.

I also grew up splitting firewood for the old man. Get a maul and bust them up when it's real cold...or buy a gas powered one...but believe me, it's still real work, don't kid yourself.

Get a sledge hammer and a couple of wedges. And if that doesn't work, get a maul. And if that doesn't work, marry a woman that owns a 24 hp log splitter. That would be me.

I said the same exact thing watching their video. Also, looks like all of the logs they're splitting are already dried and seasoned. Good luck using that thing to split a freshly cut red oak. Hydraulic splitter FTW!
