I planted a couple of trees last fall. They have both put on leaves this spring and I think are doing well. But I am noticing on my bur oak that some of the leaves are looking strange. Is this a normal thing for new growth or should I be concerned? The first two pics are just for over all reference. The third pic is leaves on a new growth limb. The limb itself is very green. The 4th pic is some yellow leaves that are up under the canopy of the tree. they are very shaded. The 5th pic is of some mottled leaves on a lower branch. Am I being paranoid or is there something going on with my tree?

The orange tips are typical of new growth and leaves that are overly shaded often wilt and fall off like in the fourth picture. I don't know what is going on with those leaves in the bottom pic though. I'll leave that to the tree experts. Overall the tree looks pretty good to me, but I am not an arborist.

Bur Oak. Should I be concerned or is this normal...

It is normal to me. Yes the last picture shows some kind of disease or abnormality. I have five burr oaks that I planted in 1990. Almost all of them had something similar to that when they were young. I ignored it. I don't notice anything on them any more and they are big and beautiful. Maybe I lucked out, but I wasn't going to replace them. I had showed the leaf problem, similar to yours, to a horticulturist and he told me to remove the tree, without telling me the name of the problem. That was when I decided to ignore him and see if the trees make it on their own since I really did not know the identity of the problem.

You need to kill more grass around it. At least a 3' diameter all around. We did an experiment with windbreaks in the Panhandle (Dumas) and found the trees with no grass competition grew 50% faster.

That is why my grass is a disaster. did not do my fall pre-emergent or spring weed treatment because of the new trees. I am in the process of getting the 1/3 of the yard that is St Augustine to spread, but that is going to take a while.

But I applaud you on your choice of tree selection.

If you have a mastadon bur the acorns it produces every two years are gigantic!

I have two planted in 1994. So pretty good size now. I've seen all the stuff in your pics and did nothing and they are fine.

In ten years you will be cussing those trees late fall. The acorns are big as golf balls and a lot of them. And the big leaves cause a serous work day raking them up. But a good tree
