Where are you located? My first guess is one of the pins shifted. Hard to explain in a few words. Take it apart and I think you will find something.

I broke my first one open last year. They are surprisingly simple. Just go for it and give it a good cleaning while you have it open.

The 336 isn't difficult to take down. There are less than a dozen screws and you are done.

A vice helps

Remove the front end cap and the screw thru the mag tube. Keep your thumb on the end of the mag tube so the spring and follower don't shoot out. The hand guard will slide forward once you remove the mag tube about 1-2" and clear the receiver.

The top screw in the back removes the stock

The hammer spring is held in place by a retaining clip that is held on one end by a slot in the receiver and by tension on the other. With the hammer forward, rotate the free end of the clip to the side and remove it and the spring from the hammer extension bar. Remove the hammer screw

Drop the lever so that the bolt is back far enough to unlock. Remove the lever's screw and it will come straight out when about 90 degrees to the bolt.

Remove the receiver's bottom plate/trigger bar after removing its three screws.

Note: Do not remove the small screw directly behind the loading gate. It only holds the gate to the frame.

Remove the bolt from the back of the receiver. There is a small v spring fitted into a slot on the left rear of the receiver. It will fall free once the bolt is removed.

Once the screws are out, there is a retainer block about an inch from the rear on the receiver that will lift out. With it removed the lifter will come out the bottom.

Done!

I ran into this issue with mine. It was simple to break down. Mine is a truck gun so it hasn't had the best care in the world. It just needed a really good cleaning and it fixed my issue. Hope you get it figured out!
