Mosquito control for bigger yards

I live on 2 acres outside of Houston and it is miserable trying to sit on my back porch at night. I have used Cutter with good success in smaller yards in the past.

Will something like this work for a larger yard if I just spray heavily around our porch? I can't very well treat the whole yard with the Cutter hose attachment. Is there a better product I should consider for small acreage?

Is everyone out in that spartan(I think that is the name?) stuff now? I bought abox of it last year and haven't used it yet.

Seems at first people were swaring by it, but now recently it seems OB posters are saying the opposite.

I use Bifen IT on a hose end sprayer Can treat just the area you use and it will keep the mosquitos from bothering you.

I live on an acre in Katy right off Buffalo Bayou. Mosquitos can get pretty bad so here's my system ...

Step 1: Go on the attack with Spartan Mosquito Eradicator. The formula inside each tube supposedly attracts and kills the "hunting" mosquitoes. (Pulled that straight off their website)

Step 2: Still on the offensive with the Summit Mosquito Dunk(s). I won't get into the science behind this one, but I have a small bucket of water left outside (intentionally) along the shaded side of the garage to knock back even more mosquitoes.

Step 3: Here's where I play defense with four strategically placed citronella candles along the patio + picaridin spray (which doesn't leave that greasy feel like standard DEET products)

All in all, the picaridin spray is a no brainer. The rest have varying results.

Recommendation from the OB on a prior thread.

Use the Bifen XTS which is for outdoor use. Oil based and lasts longer than the IT. Spray trees, bushes, g re ass, perimeter. This does an amazing job, lasts about a month

You need a multi prong approach. I'm on 1.5 acres and deal with the same.

1) Spartan for long term. It's best to stagger the start times. I start with four. Then 6 weeks later add two more. Then 6 weeks after that add two more. That gets me through the season.

2) Bifen once a month

3) After a heavy rain or if I'm having an outdoor party, I'll do the fogger. That seems to knock them down but only for a short time.

How much is used per gallon? How fast do you go through the quart or gallon?

Spartans are awesome. But you have to follow the manufacturer guidelines. If you start late with them you need to double up. I got mine up late so I may have to add more. And I'm going to go against the trend and recommend malathion instead of bifenthren because there is so much pressure on that chemical. Malathion after a rain combined with the Spartans keeps them pretty much gone completely for me. Yes malathion has a smell to it but it's gone after 30 minutes and is safe once dry. Make sure to spray your shrubs and bushes. Mosquitos like a place to stay away from the wind

Been using the Spartans for a couple years and they work great. As others have mentioned get them up early or even before mosquitos get bad. I put 4 up before the rainy season and have few mosquitos in a very hot humid location surrounded by heavily wooded bush.

second this. Our lot is 3 acres, 3 side dense woods with a creek. These seem to do the trick

We live in BCS and back up to a wooded creek. We have a home misting system which is nails. We spray Bifen around the perimeter trees. We also have a Dynatrap UV mosquito trap which works pretty well. I tried the Spartan and - I'm a scientist who followed the directions to a T - they don't work and are mostly placebo.

Some Rook poster came on here a year or so ago and left a dissertation on them. Was the dude's life mission to discredit them. Pretty convincing case against them.

This is probably a dumb question, but what else does the Bifen kill?

It's indiscriminate in what it kills, will take down bees and butterflies etc as well

I have the gallon and it should last years. Just needs .32 Oz per gallon

At my place roaches, spiders, fire ants, ticks, chiggers fleas and other bugs. I'm sure it's harmful to bees if that's what you're asking.

The xts is a higher concentration than the IT. The IT instructions say 1 ounce per gallon. So maybe a half ounce.

I now have a broadcast sprayer that goes in the bed of my side x side. Mosquitos were horrible yesterday morning. I sprayed 4 acres with the 35 gallon sprayer and it certainly has knocked them down.

Last year, the mosquitos laughed at my spartan traps.....

Anybody have a mosquito misting system? Is it worth it?

I added spartan last year to my normal monthly cutter spraying and noticed a massive reduction in mosquitos. I'm not sure if the mosquito season was milder last season or if they worked, but I definitely noticed a difference.

Summit mosquito dunks were mentioned earlier, I use their mosquito bits and they work wonders. My mosquitos were coming from a low swampy area near our house. Now every time the swamp floods, I throw out a handful of the mosquito bits into the water and we hardly ever have them. Before I started this they were awful.
