I see.
I owe Doc c an apology. He obviously knows what he's talking about and I don't. I'm just very surprised.
Apology accepted...no hard feelings.

I have done a metric ton of tails and declaws.

The ear cropping has really fallen out of favor.

As a veterinarian you probably risk more ridicule professionally and publicly for cropping ears. Hence my comment that is was a "dying art".

There are still some folks out there doing them however...

Call Briarcrest Vet Clinic. I used to work there. They'll give you a price, you come in on a visit to talk about the procedure and the style you want. Can't remember what we charged for a dobi but I'd guess it's 350-4. Just call and ask. Once it's done you'll come back to tape them once a week until they're standing. Are they already creased? May be tough to get a show cut if they're already creased.

Idk if I'd ever get them done myself because it seems like a bigger pain in the ass than it's worth, but to each their own.

It is a pain in the ass for several weeks. I believe we had to put a cone on my dog to keep him from scratching at the ears as they healed. Your changing bandages and taping ears for several weeks. He was hurting for a few days after the surgery. If you have a second dog they may chew/lick the ears which will compound the issues. I don't think I would do it again all things considered. But then again I didn't want to do it in the first place.

My female had the cone to prevent her from scratching her ears because as they healed they had a terrible itching sensation

Lots of good information here. It appears I'm picking up a pup in OK. I will either go to Houston to have the ears cropped or try the one at Briarcrest since it's very close to me

Thanks everyone

I still do them occasionally after making every effort to talk owners out of it. My rationale is better I do it right than owner hack them off themselves. (Yes it happens). Cost is usually in 500 range.

I used to do a lot but as mentioned, tapered off. Many people don't want it done anymore. Now if someone wants it done they have to listen to a barrage of reasons why NOT to do it. Some I convince and a few I see some months later with cropped ears.

Purely cosmetic and no guarantee the ears will stand. All the risks of surgery, anesthesia, infection and getting the incisions to heal and the ears to stand on a
10 +/- week old dog- just so it will look different.

Just sounds like a waste of money to me

If you like your doberman to look like a traditional doberman

You will avoid it looking like this at all costs

Most of the show folks use Brittmore vet hospital in the cypress area. The vets do a ton of ears there and know the difference in style from one breed to another so you won't come out with pit ears on a dobie.
