I was watching a YouTube video and the guy was in Australia on vacation. He purchased some Kangaroo meat from the local grocery store....claimed it was very good and also very lean.

Curious if any of you all have tried it before and what you thought?

It's been a long time but, yeah it's pretty good. Very lean red meat.

I've eaten some at an Australian-themed restaurant in Germany before. I don't have any negative recall of eating it, so it must not have been too awful. Much like my experience with eating zebra meat.

Our Vet keeps it in stock to give to dogs with severe gastric issues. Our Lab loved it but I did not eat any of it.

Had it years back when I was in Sydney. At the time, decades ago I felt it a cross between mutton and venison.

This was the first thing I thought about when I read the OP. I'm glad you found it because I would have only been able to search "kangaroo cafeteria". If I remember correctly ground kangaroo meat was cheaper than ground beef so the cafeteria manager was saving money by mixing beef and kangaroo. I'm about 95% sure I read that when this originally came out. Probably should have run something like that by his boss first, but I don't think it's that big of a deal.

We visited Australia a few months ago and had some. It was very good. Tasted like a really good steak. We didn't have it at a restaurant - we had it at a BBQ in a park after a hiking tour of the Blue Mountains.

I've had it on a couple of occasions, and as one would expect, its all about the recipe and preparation. As stated, its very lean, not especially strong tasting but has a distinct taste. In the right recipe it is good, but nothing special in my opinion.

Had some a few years ago at a restaurant, thought it was great. Was like a cross between venison and beef, wasn't gamey at all. Lean, but tender.

Had it once before. Nothing really jumped out at me indicating that it was exotic. Paired it with some hoppy beer.

I saw some of that in the freezer section at Sprouts one time

We were in Australia a few months ago and after I had it once, I had it every time I saw it on the menu, which was fairly regular. It's not gamey at all and very tender, if cooked correctly. Nobody we came across would cook it past medium rare.

I'm dating myself here, but didn't Jack in the Box serve kangaroo meat back in the 80s?

Before they closed I had it in burger form at Sammie's Wild Game Grill in Houston.

It was good......well seasoned........perhaps a touch dry.

It's delicious, had some in Savannah.

Lived in AU a couple of years, and we ate a fair amount of it. The ground meat is very good, but the muscle fibers tend to make for a pretty stringy steak. It's not overly tough by any means, but it's very fibrous meat. It's not as good as properly handled/prepared venison in my opinion, but I wouldn't turn it down. They farm red deer over there, so that was my preferred meat.

In fairness...everything they served was dry.

I m pretty sure it was confirmed at some point (seem to recall they admitted it and vowed to stop using it). But I think it was maybe in the late 70s, because I think I was under 10 when it was going on. We used to stop at the Jack in the Box on the way through Baytown every other weekend on the way to see my grandmother over in Beaumont, and she passed away in the early 80s. I remember thinking about it while we were still going to that Jack in the Box on the way to her house.
