I love Sunny... he builds great stuff. But the wheels on that are awful.

If you want an option for a fully custom version in the same price range, check out Backline Fabrication. Ryan build my custom "competition" pit which is a few inches bigger than the backyards in the same price range.

Ryan, is good people. He was just at my shop Sunday he picked up a long 500 gallon I came across, plus I'm building a pit for the new Killens and he wanted to check it out.

Ryan is good people, indeed. Sunny is too. Both make an excellent product. Btw, Ryan built me this:

Ryan is also going to take care of a pig smoking device for me when I remodel my house.

Wow. I'm a big fan of his work and always have been impressed with the quality he puts out, but 4K is a little steep..... would have a hard time paying that.

Buy a 150 gallon propane tank and the metal yourself, take it to someone else who can weld and you could easily have a bigger pit for much cheaper (probably half the cost if not even less). Yeah it may not have perfect, spotless welds but it'll still cook just fine.

That's definitely a little steep, the firebox looks a little oversized, which is ok if it had a dampener, but it doesn't. You're paying extra for the name on this model

The firebox is insulated, so the outward size is not truly indicative of the fire chamber inside.

My pit from back line has the same type of setup with insulation.

Actually he's not, I respectfully disagree with you. Ryan, Sunny Moberg, Mill Scale, or even myself, we put a lot of time and focus on the details on these pits, we will have close to 150 hours in the pit we're building for Killens. Quality isn't cheap, and cheap isn't quality.

If he has 30 hours in these backyard smokers I'd be surprised , not saying it isn't a quality smoker, but there's at least $800 premium tied to the name...there's plenty of fabricators that could build that to spec and would be unable to charge $4K for it

You're wrong. But entitled to your own opinion. There's a huge difference in welding as a hobby and welding for a living. I think I'd know considering I've been on both ends of those spectrums.

I've been looking at reverse flow smokers from a few makers for awhile. So when I look at this that's what I'm comparing it to in my mind.

Here is one from Johnson smokers out of Ennis, tx.
https://johnsonsmokers.com/2d-adv-trl/

$350 dollars more($4350)
On a trailer
The cooking chamber is the same diameter, but 40 inches longer than the moberg(80% larger)
It doesn't have an insulated firebox

When I look at these two models and compare them it's hard for me to understand how they are similarly priced. I know that bigger doesn't always mean better(or at least that's what I tell myself), but it does usually mean more expensive in the smoker world.

I also look at models from lyfetime and all seasons feeders that are around $1300.

The pit man, who posts on here has a pretty nice reverse flow that runs around $2,500(can't remember exactly) and looks to be larger than the moberg posted above.

I can't speak to what other build, or what they charge, but I can tell you there's significantly more time in a insulated firebox.

Just a for instance, we do a fully insulated firebox, but we also have built in dampers into your fully insulated door, we machine and build all of the linkage for these internal dampers, etc. we put about 30 hours into our firebox door alone. So take that for what it's worth. To do a pit right it takes time, it's all of the little things, the hinges, the dampers, making sure the doors seal, all of this type of stuff that takes the most time.

As far as life time pits go, I'll say this...you get what you pay for. Pretty similar to the people who talk up Bucees firepits and stuff, they're cheaper and look just as nice at the beginning, but what do you think when it rots out and you're buying a new one every two to three years?

I understand when you are making a custom pit like the one you're talking about for killen's everything is having to be fabricated. So the time involved is significantly higher.

On a backyard model, like the one above, it probably took awhile to make the first one. Then they have all the measurements and a plan which should make it significantly easier to make number 2 thru 1,000.

It's hard for us to see where the 4k goes. I understand they are in business to make money so they're going to charge more than what it costs to make.

I know with Ryan or Myself, we don't build cookie cutter one size fits all pits, Moberg uses jigs for a lot of his stuff which is why you see down at the bottom of the listing the OP posted it says not customizable. Ryan and myself are always wanting to put some custom touches for each customer individually. Check out the pit Backline just built for Liberty BBQ on their Instagram page, know why Backline built it instead of Moberg? Because it needed a side firebox door due to Liberty's pit room layout, Moberg doesn't have time to do touches like this, not a knock on Sunny, I hope to be where he is one day, but when you have demand on your pits like he does, it hamstrings you on going outside of the box because you've been a two and half year backlog.

Thanks for your responses, I'm just curious about this type of thing. It seems like quite a few models have come across this board in this price range in the last year or so.

Also, I know three people with lyfetimes that are over ten years old with only some surface rust. I get your point though it's not the same as a custom pit.

Hey I mean zero disrespect with any of my responses, to each their own. Everybody has their price point and want list, great thing about capitalism is most people can find something that works for them and their budget.

None taken. I thought that damper design you posted awhile back was pretty slick. Never seen anything quite like it.

Just wait until you seen Killen's 1000, its going have a similar set up.

Pit builders, i am wanting to get an idea of the cost to build a rotisserie smoker large enough for a whole pig (250 or 500 gallon?). the lid would probably need to be counter-balanced and the spit will be run on a pulley by a 120v electric motor.

My uncle had one but his descendants have disappeared off the face of the earth so i don't know what happened to it.

Definitely doable no doubt. Send me a message and let's get some more specifics.
