I've been a big fan of Mobergs pits for a long time, sadly when I was fabricating for a living I never had the time of opportunity to build anything for myself or have a customer request anything, not that I was really advertising it.

My dad had a buddy who requested a badass pit with a insulated firebox, so I finally got to take my designs on paper and we're building the first pit for Cen Tex Smokers, our new side venture.

I took everything I liked about a Moberg, mainly the really nice craftsmanship as well as the big insulated firebox and tweaked it where I thought it could make the pit better functionally. Obviously Moberg is great, not knocking him at all, but what he charges I frowned on his firebox door/damper design. So we came up with the insulated door with built in dampers looks really sweet. So far we have another 250 on the list, and we're waiting for green lights from a handful of other BBQ folks, two of which are quite high profile and will really help get the name out. Would love to hear feedback on our design.

Yes that's the insulated firebox door, it has the dampers built into it. Also if you look the firebox door frame is tapered, the inner side of the door has the same taper so when you close the door it's a super tight seal, then you're working off your dampers to control your fire.

Looks pretty good and well made. How big of a stack are you going with? The biggest thing that has always impressed me with Moberg's stuff is the draw his pits have. You can have the front door open and still see smoke getting pulled across the grates properly. If you look at his Instagram he has a video 2 posts ago from a pit he made for Tejas in Tomball showing how well it does.

250 will have a 6" stack, 500 will have a 8" elbow reduced to 6", 1000 will have a 10" elbow to 8" stack. Same as Moberg. We know how good those pits draw, we're not changing that.

They're external, I'll post additional pics of the door to clarify. What you're seeing in that video is the door itself, the hinges mount to the edge of the lip of the door.

Is the door tapered on both sides? When it sitting on the table it looks flat on the table side. Almost like the damper handle should be on the other side so the door and firebox taper fit together I really like the design of the damper system.

The inner side of the door has a taper that matches the frame of the door on the firebox, when the door is shut the 45 taper on both the door and the door frame seal together. I'm looking to see if I have a picture of the inner side of the door.

The outside face of the door is taper as well mainly for looks, we had to add a compartment for the damper linkage on the outside of the door outside the insulated portion. Basically you can look at Mobergs door, and imagine adding an additional compartment on the outside of the door to house the linkage for the damper slots.

Is there a functional reason for the two cooking area doors being shaped like that or is it just a cosmetic design feature?

250 on skids, painted with the firebox door dampers included is 5k over a thousand cheaper than Moberg, and I'm eating some time because there's about 30 hours in those dampers alone.

Well, to say I'm disappointed reading this would be the understatement of the year (including last year since it's just February ) When you reached out to me on DM and called me, all I had for you were words of encouragement and welcomed you to the pit building family. After reading this I now see your true colors, personality and integrity. Air vents are so old school my grandfather even questioned them. If you don't know my grandfather, look up Smokey Denmark Sausage. You'll probably have a rack in the firebox for the wood too. I still wish you well, but remember this, the BBQ Family is tight knitted. As they say, imitation is the highest form of flattery

I'm not opposed to Moberg coming on here and defending his designs, but I don't think the OP said anything that bad either, and was even very complimentary of Moberg. All he said was he wanted a better design for modulating airflow, so he went made it. I'm failing to see the wrong doing here.

Agree with Drummer. The only bad thing I can think of is IF the OP got inside info from moberg by saying he wasn't going to build commercially or something like that... if that didn't happen I see nothing wrong here. It's a free market and not mob run.

The OP didn't offend me at all. It's the full contradiction of his DM on IG and the phone call I had with him. Saying "I'm going for my own look not to be a copycat" and then in this post basically saying he's copying me completely with improvements. I'm honestly flattered people want to copy some of my design features. It's the way he went about it in private. Shows character, that's all. Remember this, your vehicle doesn't have an air restrictor to control speed. Fuel delivery is key, same with a smoker. I mean it when I say I wish him well.

In the OP's defense, he did defend you recently on another thread when I called your recent backyard smoker line over priced (which I stand behind), but I'm a capitalist, so if your pits can bring that kind of money I'm all for it. Just saying he has no ill feelings towards you, or if he does, he hid it well.
