Anyone had success planting B Dahl? The seed company we are buying from recommends using a Brillion planter, but I'm having trouble even finding one. Just seeing what the resident experts on Texags think.

Where are you located? There's a guy in Mason who runs one and will plant whatever you want.

Check with the NRCS office or soil and water conservation district in your county. Some offices have a Brillion grass seeder and will rent it out to individuals working to reestablish native/improved grasses.

Another option is to purchase a 3 point tractor cone type broadcaster and then use a drag or packer to go over the areas you've slung out the seed. Turner Seed Company at Breckenridge sells the cone type broadcasters.

Use a drop seeder while using the fertilizer attachment. Drag a chain harrow behind it to disturb the ground/cover up the seed. See if you can find an old LF10 or LF12.

Less is more with b Dahl. Make sure the ground isn't soft at all but mostly free of other grass and weeds. Planted tons of that stuff and it grows great everywhere except in bottomland where it's wet for long periods. Heck it's growing in the caliche by my front gate.

My place is in Bell County just outside of Temple. I contacted the local NRCS office, but unfortunately they don't have a seeder to rent. The office in Georgetown does but they won't allow me to take it that far. Apparently it's so big it can't be hauled on a trailer. It must be towed. They did give me a list of possible contractors but so far none plant B Dahl. May have to try and find a drop spreader and cultipacker.

How many acres? I know a guy out of Hamilton that would probably come do it.

Edit to add he would also provide his own seed for much cheaper than you than you are most likely buying it for.

I've got a 23 acre field and a 37 acre field that I need to do this spring. I'm thinking B Dahl in one and Jiggs in the other.

You can have the seed mixed with CRACKED milo, and it will broadcast reasonably well. A slightly roughened seedbed is fine. The ABSOLUTE KEY is to be able to pack it afterwards. Seed buried over a quarter inch is too deep.

If you'd like to talk to the guy out of Hamilton email me username @ Gmail and I'll pass along his info. He's will to travel 2-3 hours I think depending on his current work load.

Where are you located Eddy? I ended up buying a Brillion seeder and planted 90 acres with it last spring. I will say I tried the broadcast method followed by a drag harrow back in 2020 and nothing came up. Apparently my seedbed wasn't firm enough so the harrow ended up covering the seed too deep. My NRCS agent says that B Dahl must be planted at 1/4" depth and no deeper or you will kill it.

Bottom line is to have a very firm seedbed before you plant.

Outside of Lampasas.I have disk the acers. Have the seed for 15 acers. will rake it and wait a bit before planting. Then will decide of how to plant with suggestions.

If you have access to a cultipacker that is the best way to prep the seedbed. We did that in 2021 on 45 acres, spread the seed with a drop spreader and then ran the cultipacker back over it and had great success. The only problem is the three step process takes time and you need a really calm day. Any wind and you could loose seed coming out of the drop spreader.

Anyone I talk to will tell you Mr. Eilers in Hamilton for b-Dahl and I believe Mark Jackson in China Springs for Bermuda variety sprigging. I get what you're saying, though. Possibly trying to not recommend one person over the other for risk of looking like there's funny biz going on is my guess.

We used to provide a list of spriggers, seeders, dozer operators, sprayers, etc…….. Any contractor could be on there if they asked. I'm an old, but it might be someone squalled about not being on there so they can't do it anymore.

Crosstimbers Ag should know someone

How big of tractor do you have? I have a 10' trillion drill ( like a Brillion). It got shook up on my rock pile but could be fixed and used. Are you mechanically inclined?

I used it on a 4240 with 1000 lbs of front weights.

How is your B Dahl doing in Bell County? I'm in Belton south of I-14 and looking to plant some. Are you on blackland soils or the more rocky soil type west of I-35?
