Their lures are out of stock everywhere and the website is down. Anybody know what the deal is or if they went out of business?

Have you tried allying them?

I noticed that on BAAD and wondered. Bass Pro doesn't have any in Grapevine.

I told this story before. Somewhere around 1988-89 I took about four guys to Port Mansfield. We stayed in the Red Bandanna usually. I walked over to the small gas station on the left as you drove in. Looked around and bought two three packs of a Kelly Wiggler touts. The color description was clear red neon. On that day I smoked everyone on reds. At the end of the day I had one left.

Everyone headed back to the store to buy some. The rack I had left with about 15 packs was empty. I asked the young girl working there about them. A guy stocking beer said, "Those are guide baits, we took them off the rack."

"What do you mean by guide baits?"

"The color is on a trial basis to get feed back from the guides."

"Well I'm the guy that's guiding these guys, how many do you have?"

I bought what they had which was maybe 20-25 packs. We had a great day.

When I got back home I called to speak to Pat Kelly and his wife answered. We talked and after down on my knees pleading she said, " I just can't do it!"

Norton had just started his lure in Port Mansfield. As a last resort I asked, "Do you know if Bob Norton will do a private pour?"

"How many do you want?

"How many do you have?"

She shipped me about a 1-1/2' square box. I used that one bait for about 15 years exclusively. I never saw anything on the market close to it. When I started getting low I called Kelly Wigglers and found out that Pat's widow had sold the business and they didn't do private pours.

I called a bunch of places and the first response was usually, "What's a tout?"

I called Texas Tackle Factory a couple of times because I liked the action of the Trout Killer but I never got a call back. I tried one more time and the lady said, "So and so is in, he can help you."

I don't remember his name. I started telling him about the lure. After a pause he said, "I've had a lot of people ask me about that lure over the years but no one has ever described it in as much detail. How can you do that?"

"Well it's pretty easy because I'm holding one!"

It got real quiet. "You are kidding?"

He went on to explain that Pat Kelly and his Dad were best friends. His Dad had designed the lure. As I remember both had passed away about six months after that guide pour and they never came on the market.

I sent him the remainder of the ones I had in packages and he did a private pour for me.....you get a big box.

The only thing I have ever seen since that was close was a private pour by Roy's by Reaction Strike called a Jerk Jr. in Red Tide. Dip the tail in red and nearly exact. Roy's did another private pour that was good called Marker 37. Both work very well and I have a bunch but they are not in Reaction Strike's line........or Roy's now..

The pictures are not a true depiction.I don't have any of the original KW touts or shrimp tails but they were very clear with tiny red flecks and a pink tail.

The top one was from the TTF pour. The color in the old pours would bleed over time and these are very old. Originally the Trout Killers were very clear with tiny red flecks & the pink tail.

The other three were from Roy's private pour. They are much clearer than the picture indicates. The top one is how a Red Tide came out of the packet. The second is one I dipped in red as I like red better than pink.

I haven't fished much since Harvey but will be soon as we are nearing the end of a three year rebuild.

The bottom one is a result of putting several in a baggie and the dipped tails bleeding.

If this isn't clear let me know.

The Reaction Strike baits were called Jerk Jr. & Diet Jerk Jr. Roy's special orders were the diet version. They were extremely soft, good for one piggy perch, one trout and maybe two reds. Fantastic action and I assume I was the only one that loved them and when I heard about their decision regarding special pours I bought everyone they had in stock.. Not sure why they didn't do a Jerk Jr. pour.

I stand corrected. That last batch of red tide I bought was Jerk Jr. The Marker 37 & Blue Runner were Diet. It surprises me that Reaction Strike wouldn't pour some of those colors because a lot of what they have is the same look. My best friend thinks Texas Tackle Factory has the best bait in that Trout Killer-II in liquid shrimp. He tried to get them to pour him a batch or make some for retail and they never did. I found some but the price will sky rocket when he runs out.

Great story! Question on the nomenclature: was a "tout" the shape of the lure? If so, how would you describe it?

Edit to add: the bottom three look very similar to the Brown Lures Devil Eye, shape is almost identical, but the coloration of the eye is different. Have you asked them if they'd do a pour?

We have two colors from TTF that are golden for us in the Killer Flats Minnow. I was chasing them down also, for a good while. About 5 years ago, when they ceased their online presence, and only supported sales through BAAD marine, it was hell finding any of their stuff after 6 months or so, even in local Academy stores that carried TTF. I think they basically folded, as I had 2 or 3 bagbites promos that were sent in, and never fullfilled by them. In the past, when they let one slip by, and I emailed, I would always receive the promotional product in return very quickly via priority mail. This last time I tried, I believe either my email bounced or I never got a reply.

Bob Norton is still making baits in Rockport, AFAIK. It's been 8 years or so now, but we used to call him on a Thursday, and tell him we were coming into town, and go by and purchase his baits in one pound bags. He is a great guy to talk with. He might be willing to do a custom pour for you of maybe Sand Eels? They are similar to that profile you posted above.

Another option for a custom pour, would be to talk to Tobin at TroutSupport.com. He has a bait he designed called a grasswalker, and he has them made in the SE United States. You could probably get him an example of what you want, and I would bet he could get you a price via his channels on a custom pour run of them, like you are looking for. If you want me to, I can get you in touch with him to see if he would be willing to help you out.

By the way, this kind of story, and finding one bait that crushes all the rest, is why I buy a whole peg or two of the good ones when I find a deal on them. My buddies all laugh at me and call me a tackle hoar (the correct spelling was blocked). Later, when all retail outlets no longer have em, guess who comes crawling back to the tackle hoar for a fix?

I often have gallon size ziplocs of some of my favorite baits, and they produce like crazy for me. Is that saying the new stuff might not work as well? Not really. But it's saying I don't have to think too much about the new stuff. It also helped me out when Academy decided to no longer sell Saltwater stuff North of IH-10. I am still surviving off my stash, and not having to pick up too much. It still makes me sad that I cannot spend a lunch a week looking at soft plastics for saltwater in my local Academy store.

When plastics first came out these things were called touts. Any thing similar was a tout. I guess marketing took over and they became shrimp tails, red killers, trout killers, jerk, shad, mullet, gulp, sand eel etc.

Seven or eight of us went to Gross Savanne a bunch of times. The one lure that was head and shoulders above the rest was a Culprit worm in red shad. If you ran out.....too bad. Three of us went out one afternoon and two of us had them. One didn't. It was the ultimate adventure for about two hours.

The next time we went he put a 48 quart Igloo in the boat with a lock on it. No one asked.

When he lost the first Culprit he unlocked it and it was half full of red shad worms. About two weeks after we left the dam broke and they lost all the fish and had to restocked. We never went back. Great place....I need to ask about those worms.

We went to Grosse Savanne about 3 years ago and Gulp Alive mullet in white was the bait of choice for the guides. We did pretty well on them. But the biggest on our boat was caught when I chunked a weedless gold spoon with a pink plastic tail at the base of one of the discharge areas. We usually don't keep those monster reds in Texas, but those Cajun guides insisted.

Back in the day Academy used to have a worm bar that had touts in addition to the traditional bass worms. One of the worm bar touts in particular was a traditional shrimp trail, pumpkinseed with a chartreuse tail. The tail was molded and a bit translucent. Not paint dipped like I find them now. That bait was nails.

Still have a whole bunch of Zoom Z nails. One of the best senko type baits ever. My old bass club loves them and to see me break out a pack.

Talked to a guy that works at fishing tackle unlimited. He told me TTF is out of business. He said they sold their molds to MirrOlure.

Those look similar to a Brown plastics lure ... my buddy has a bunch of the red and whites w the white eyes... those things are amazing for trout.

"fishing tackle unlimited" in Houston shows that they carry the Baad marine ball tail plastics.. (brown lures devil eye).. I'm going to go by their tmrw and I'll see if they have any.. I need some myself .. if I find some I'll let you know

My liquid shrimp obsessed friend lives in the Houston area. He said that BAAD was trying to buy TTF and apparently it fell thru. They haven't had any TTF baits on their website in quite awhile.

The Baad website shows the ball tail Devils eye lure for sale? So does FTUnlimited?

I hope they still make those Brown plastics .. that's my favorite plastic, I probably have 3-4 bags of the red and whites left .. panic !

I was only talking about TTF's soft plastics.....Hackberry, Minnows and the Red & Trout Killers. I've always thought the Devil Eye etc were that spin off from Paul Brown where he kept the Corky etc and not apart of TTF..

Just Googled them, are they still open? We have to go to Victoria all the time for my wife's eye checkups, could definitely drop in and get stuff if they are open.

I still have a few bags of their baits and they were my go to for a while. Especially in pumpkinseed/white/chartreuse. Too bad that they didn't make it. Catering to the whims of the Texas coastal fisherman is a tough way to make money.

These days I fish a lot of down south and matrix baits. I feel like they have a lot better action and are very durable. I know a lot of people who fish the assassins, but it drives me nuts using a pack of baits over a couple of hours.

Those pumpkin chartreuse white are my favorites too... Luckily last fall I noticed a big drop in ttf product placement so I went online and bought 7 packs

We had this idea at one point about 18 mos ago, when we noticed we couldn't find them anymore. We tried to drop by a Victoria address one day but it seemed that they had been there at one time, but were no longer in business at that location. All I recall, is that it was a warehouse kinda looking place with some glass double doors and a parking lot.

Does this clear red metal flake and pink tail closely resemble the color you remember?

sunchaser
How long do you want to ignore this user?

That's very close. The Reaction Strike Red Tide pic I posted earlier is closer. Not necessarily as to color but the red flecks/flakes/specs were smaller like they are in the Reaction. When I bought the Kelly Wigglers nearly all the salt water plastics were touts. Not near the action....just a shrimp tail.....it was clear...red specs and a pink tail.

The original Trout Killer by TTF private pour was very clear with a pink tail....much better action than a tout. The color in all of them has bled to that darker look. I started out with the red dip on the Reaction Strike because I didn't have pink at the time and I've stuck with it.

Yours looks good....

Blast from the past...

I was amazed this weekend to behold 4 bags of TTF Killer Flats Minnows in my favorite color, Texas Roach, on a peg at a tackle shop. I couldn't get them off the peg quick enough!

Since they went out of business, and I really love them, it made my day.

I reread this thread and wishing I had kept a couple of the original Kelly Wigglers. I stood up to go get something and saw an old wade fishing hat in my study bookshelf that I used a long time ago. I had attached swivels to the top and hung spoons, touts and Mirror lures. The picture is one of the original Kelly Wiggler Touts. As I stated earlier the lure was clear with small red flecs and maybe 3/4" of the tail was pink. It's been on that hat for twenty five plus years.

Texas Tackle Factory is back! Looks like they are under a new owner and their Lures are original. They have a website: www.ttflures.com. I found a business number of 1-361-230-4627. Hope this helps!
