Or indoors in Kingsville. I didn't realize they had a serpent toxicology lab at A&M Kingsville. I got a tour today after teaching a class. Snakes don't bother me, but this one creeped me out. It was maybe 3 1/2 feet long, but thicker than my arm with a baseball sized head. Evil looking snake.....

In humans, a bite from a Gaboon viper causes rapid and conspicuous swelling, intense pain, severe shock and local blistering. Other symptoms may include uncoordinated movements, defecation, urination, swelling of the tongue and eyelids, convulsions and unconsciousness.

I'll take a hard pass on that.

Gaboon vipers have the largest fangs of any venomous snake. They are blend in incredibly well to the West African forest floors where they live. Along with the Rhinoceros viper, their patterning and coloration is among the most extravagant of all viper species while at the same time also serving as some of the world's best camouflage.

Every gaboon I've worked with just lays there like a sausage. Hooking their fat butts in and out can be tiring. They don't strike much but when they do it's lightning fast and powerful. They also hiss with a super growly, deep, loud raspy sound. Very creepy. A lot of hobbyists actually free handle gaboons because they are fairly calm. That's a big no to me. Not worth the risk from that snake. Stunning snakes, but you have to respect the venom.

That is very much in keeping with their description by most naturalists. By pretty much all accounts they are markedly timid and docile for a viper.

I've handled venomous snakes on quite a few occasions (mostly as a younger, dumber kid/teenager) but no way in hell would I EVER free handle any venomous snake... I have zero idea why people do this.

Free handling is the stupid. I only use tongs and hooks with venomous, no matter how docile they are.

I might have said it in the snake thread a couple of years ago. Imagine if you could breed snakes like you do dogs and bring out certain characteristics. Like this ugly beast and a coach whip. You are welcome for the night terrors.

I kinda wanted to see a gaboon viper when I was deployed in west Africa for ebola, but the only snake I saw was a green mamba. We had a cobra on the loose in my "hotel" but I didn't see it.

One of my roommates in college had a pet gaboon viper that he kept in his room. Was awesome getting to watch it eat rats. Scary m-fer for sure!

There was/is one in the Waco zoo, down close to the floor, behind glass. I don't fear snakes, but this one always freaks me out.

I respect the venom with a quarter inch of glass between me and it at the Houston zoo

Guessing they could inject a **** ton of venom. Fearsome looking snakes. Its been a while since I've been but we used to have a huge one here at the Memphis Zoo. The coloration on it was really striking and beautiful.

I experienced all of those on a regular basis when Fran and Sherm were prowling the sideline at Kyle Field.

Except for the king cobra, they are capable of injecting a larger volume of venom than any other snake.

You can, and people do it all the time. The snakes just have to be the same species or very closely related species (just like with dogs). Cottonmouths and copperheads have actually been known to hybridize relatively frequently.

There are a ton of "designer snakes" bred for their color pattern or scaling/lack thereof. See all the options for ball pythons. There is just one species of ball python all the varieties have been bred for their pattern and color characteristics.
