How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm looking to buy some battery powered lawn care equipment and figured the great, wise OB could point me in the right direction. I want to get a push mower with a mulcher, weed eater, edger, and leaf vacuum. I would prefer all of them be the same brand so I can use the same batteries. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I believe Ryobi has the best system for homeowners right now. The batteries interchange and I believe they provide the best performance. Check the Home Depot website.

(I wouldn't do it either. Gas is still the way to go in mowers)

I have used the 40v greenworks for lawn care for about 2 years now and am happy with it. Lawn mower, weed eater, edger attachment, blower, pole saw and chain saw. Make sure you get the brushless versions. Periodically Woot has it on sale which is a good time to pick up batteries.

I've used electric weed eaters, blowers, hedge trimmers before and had no issues but I've never used an electric mower. Why is gas still the way to go? Genuinely curious.

For small to medium lawns where you don't let the grass super high - a battery mower will be just fine. Don't listen to the "battery power is for sissy boys" posters like jellycheese (flagged for trolling). She likely just wants gas equipment to feel better about herself.

I've got some EGO equipment, and its slowly replacing all my fuel powered stuff. Blower, pole saw, and trimmer. They work awesome. If I had a small turf grass lawn to mow, you bet I'd be jumping in with their mower.

Power when cutting tall grass and battery longevity. Most manufacturers make their money on batteries now. Also, if there is a change in battery style, it could make your system obsolete. Gas engine repair is relatively cheap.

I have a normal suburban lawn in Galveston county. I have an EGO leaf blower and weed eater, which replaced Echo 2 cycle equipment that finally became problematic after many years of good service. When my Honda mower dies someday, I will get the EGO mower to match. It is really nice not having to mess with gas/mix and the reduced noise is a bonus.

I have an EGO carbon fiber weed eater and it is pretty solid. Use it around the house and at the deer lease with no issues. Can confirm EGO's warranty and customer service is top notch as well - they replaced a battery that wouldn't charge no questions asked with an upgraded version, registered all of my equipment, etc. and were happy to do it.

I replaced my gas mower with an EGO self propelled. Very happy with it, and it saves me fretting over ethanol-free gas. My Ryobi (gas) power head died so my combo (weed trimmer, blower, hedge trimmer) needs to be replaced. Got a Ryobi 18V weed trimmer to interchange batteries with my drill/circular saw/saws-all, etc. and am happy enough with it. Already had a cheap ($30) gas powered blower so that'll suffice. About to be looking into hedge trimmers now. Hoping an Ego might be reasonable, since I don't need a battery.

I got the Milwaukee 18v weed eater in early 2017 and can't imagine having to go back to gas. I went with Milwaukee because my drill set has the same battery, and I've been pleased.

I have a bunch of gas powered lawn equipment already. It's all less than 10 years old. Honda mower and stihl power head with several interchangeable attachments. I figure by the time this stuff dies the battery powered stuff will be even better.

I've got a gas powered Honda mower, but do use Ryobi Battery powered products for other lawn care items. I can use the same battery for my blower and weed eater that also has an attachment for an edger. One charge of the battery allows me enough power to edge, weedeat, and use the blower. This is for a 0.2 acre lot.

Yep, they do.

I use a Stihl Weedeater that works great. I have a Cub Cadet riding mower that works great. I have 1.5 acres in beautiful East Tennessee with a nice mountain view .

The ryobi hedge trimmer in 18v is a nice product also. I have it and it works well. I have 6 or 8 tools in that line. About half of mine came from refurbished sales online for less than $35 each.

Our yard is not massive, but I cannot imagine en electric lawn mower working well. I am a skeptic.

The next blower I buy will be battery powered. Tired of 2 cycle hell.

I have EGO everything (blower, hedge trimmer, weedeater), besides my riding mower. I mistakenly left all my batteries in an unheated shed last winter which killed them, but EGO replaced them free of charge no questions asked. Can't speak to their mower, but everything else is top notch, and does the job just as well as any gas tools I've ever owned.

Do Ryobi electric mowers come in men's size?

I do. But 2 acres is enough to maintain that I don't want to maintain anymore.

While the majority of my work is in hydraulics most of my new projects have been electric. Thanks to Tesla the technology is improving and becoming more cost effective. For the majority of the yards people have an electric system is quieter, faster, more efficient, lighter, and requires less maintenance. My new one will be electric for those reasons.

A gas engine is in the 20% range for efficiency, an electric motor is over 90%. The power density advantage has shifted to electric.

Ya but you don't have a battery operated mower do you?

I use to have a corded mower when I had a postage stamp sized yard along with corded weedeater.

Have a husquvarana weedeater and riding mower now, but will probably go to batt. operated if/when this one dies.

I bought an Ego weedeater and it works well. It doesn't match my Stihl On power but good for a small yard.

I'm really surprised by the responses in this thread, we had a similar thread about electric equipment that I remembered about from last year, that was very positive on electric equipment. May 2019 thread about electric lawn equipment

I'm still a gas guy, but I can see where if you're in one of those new subdivisions where they cram houses on top of each other and yards are less than a tenth of an acre, electric kinda makes sense. No carbs/fuel problems to mess with every few years.

If I had a little-ass yard - I'd probably go electric. Wouldn't work well currently.

Hopefully, I'll never go electric. Love having a big yard.

Nope, mower is a Kubota ZTR, will never get away from that given the size of the yard. But will never go back to gas powered week eater and one of these days I'll give in and get an EGO blower to go with the weed eater. They simply work well.

I have about 300 LF of fence I weed eat, plus the house, driveway, etc. - all told it's at least 1500 LF to weed eat, and that's assuming I manage to get the fence all from one side and not have to hit the other. The battery powered weed eater does what it is supposed to do on that front. I have 2 batteries because one doesn't last, so there is some level of drawback on that. But a gas engine would need refilling with fuel as well. Plus it is way lighter, a crap ton quieter and doesn't have nearly the vibration that a gas weed eater has.

Took me a long time to break down and try the battery tools out for yard work. I'm sold now.

The end of the small engine mechanic, or at least a dramatic reduction?!

I think about that for full size ICEs as well with the push towards EVs.

No radiators that leak, no fuel injectors to clog, no spark-plugs to change, no head gaskets that blow, no starters that fail, no 3000 mile oil changes, no exhaust systems to repair, etc...

I've been really pleased with Ryobi lawn equipment. The mistake I made was buying the 18v blower. Stick with the 40v stuff and I'd recommend having an extra battery.

You won't get rid of all small engines - until battery technology gets where it can do an all day job without the need for 5-10 batteries to carry around and keep charged, professionals are going to stay with gas equipment. Same with lawnmowers, cars, etc. While the tech for batteries has come a long way, it still has a long way to go before it's a viable replacement across the board.

I can just about guarantee you that I'll never own an electric car, tractor or lawn mower.
