Thinking about getting into a long range rifle. Thinking I want a 6.5 Creedmoor and have looked into Ruger Precision or a Howa. Would like to keep it below $1200-$1500 if possible. Since I know so little about it I was hoping
For some recommendations from y'all. Thanks

I love my RPR.

But you are going to need a scope that costs as much as the rifle for good long range accuracy.

Expensive hobby.
Good optic will cost more than your gun.

i really like my Savage 10 BA Stealth. As everyone else said a good scope will be just as much if not more than the rifle.

It can be an expensive hobby. But don't let that discourage you from starting out with a budget rifle like you are thinking about.

Ruger Precision or Savage Stealth as mentioned are good budget rifles that are plenty capable. SWFA SS 10x42 scope is a cheap reliable option as well.

You can do this much cheaper than was possible back in the day.

Been looking to get into a long range plinker as well - little higher budget though. Has anybody built/assembled their own with a chassis and pre-fit barrel?

I was thinking along the lines of an Impact Precision or Defiance action, MPA BA chassis, Triggertech trigger, and a bartlein or Proof barrel (steel)....6 CM or 6.5 CM most likely.

Show up at a match, there will be someone who will let you shoot their rifle. If you don't enjoy shooting a sponsored shooter's $5,000 rifle with a $2,500 scope and another $1,000 on pads, pillows, bi/tripods and other thingies, you probably wont enjoy trying to compete with a budget rifle.

Alternatively, you could try precision rimfirethe game is the same, just smaller numbers

Careful now! Those are going to be fighting words with the "nothing made after 1964 is worth owning" crowd....as soon as they get back from the early bird dinner special anyway.

Also tagging this. Some interest in the Tiger valley 2 man matches, but don't have a bolt gun right now.

Whatever is lightest to lug around for a 2 man sniper style match is what I'd be curious about.

Nope im here, gotta say with that price point you have to look at any of the HMR rifles (HMR, HMR PRO, HMR wilderness). The only one outside of your price range would be the PRO and it can be found used in that price range. I have had mine since 2017 and have had absolutely zero issues with it, I added a jewell trigger, SiCo ASR brake, nightforce 20 MOA rail, Seekins rings and Nightforce SHV 5-20x56.

Yeah.. I'm kinda part of that crowd. I recommended the RPR and Stealth but I would never own that crap myself. Different strokes for different folks. I can at least admit that they are great deals and plenty capable of impressive accuracy even if I don't have interest in chassis rifles myself.

I wish we had gun shows on Thursdays. I can almost smell the hoppes soaked walnut stocks and cinnamon coated pecans just thinking about it.

Important note:

Let your gun get exposed to the elements a bit and it's a lot easier to justify a really good looking cerakote job.

Indeed. No competition, this is just purely for fun. We have elevation at the lease and have targets @600 yds +100 yds elevated and I've had a blast shooting them with my friends AR-10s and 308s.

Just kind of wanted something to challenge myself

I would look at the Tikka T3X CTR with 24" barrel. Whitaker's usually has them for cheap. I have had one and the trigger and bolt are wonderful out of the box. You can buy a $10 spring and make the trigger really good. You can then go over to Euro Optic and buy one of the Vortex PST close outs and have a great package for not too much.

I've got a couple of rigs like you are describing if you ever want to meet up at the range. FWIW, if I was just getting into tactical long range shooting and had a decent budget this is where I would start:
https://masterpiecearms.com/shop/mpa-ba-pmr-competition-rifle/

Several companies have started making prefit barrels for the Curtis actions

I won a 6.5 rpr in a raffle and bought a ~$500 rikon scope...I'm shocked at how good the results are. Of course there's lots of room for improvement, but the immediate results the first few times I took it out were way way better than I thought I was capable of.

A lot of guys over on snipershide aren't really sure about that one, Tikka actions usually have less issues out of the box than remingtons and that doesn't have a tikka footprint trigger so it doesn't necessarily fit tikka chassis and stocks

That MPA BA is already on my radar if I buy assembled...the leading candidate in fact. The lure to tinker though is strong in me lol.

Eyeguy you carry any of these? I know there's a place out in Richmond that stocks them. I'm a lefty...so there's that as well.

Boss Firearms in College Station has a pair of the 6.5 CM's in stock. If you order it from MPA you can get it in left handed. I have run Defiance & Impact over the past few years but switched over to the Curtis Vector this year. I am a huge fan of the 60 degree bolt throw and how smooth the action is in general

Ruger precision rifle in 6.5 creed and slap a $500-700 vortex or similar mid range ($ wise, not zoom) scope and you'll be good to go at 600 or less yards like you have at your lease. I've really enjoyed mine and I think it's one of the better looking chassis type rifles.

A lot of the guys that shoot down here are fangirling pretty hard over the Ultimatum 22, so I followed their page like two days ago, then this popped up yesterday in their pages and a few others. Hadn't been on SH in a minute, but I know there are some folks that now their ish there. Actually thought of you when I saw it, after your post the other day about building off a KRG base.

There was someone here selling a 6mm RPR for I think $750. That'd be a good start.

That be me, thanks! I have an RPR in 6mm creed. Excellent bench gun, I'm only selling cause I don't want to use it as a hunting rifle anymore. 750 obo. Really accurate gun!

$2000 all in should keep you learning for a long time not held back by equipment.

First setup: Ruger American and athlon talos. Sold it after about a year. Wanted better stock and more long term solution.

Second setup: Tikka CTR 6.5 24". Great gun and shoots great. Dropped straight into KRG bravo. Never even shot it with factory stock. $10 trigger spring and it is the nicest trigger I have ever used (not saying much but it is nice). Athlon ETR on top is great. Right over 2k for setup.
