John Deere OBD Options?

All knowing OB,

We have two John Deere tractors (1996 8300 and 2015 6105D). Instead of having to haul these in to the dealership each time a light comes, taking a good bit of time and money, we were wanting to get an OBD for them. If the code is something fairly benign, we can do the work ourselves.

It is my understanding that different years/models have different pin configurations to plug into. Do yall have something like this that you would recommend? Or something to point me in the right direction?

They do not use an obd system. It is can bus. I have been told of a $5000.00 unit that will let you talk to deere, CNH, cat, etc.

Under the right to repair act, deere can't not sell you their est software. However, they can set whatever price they want on it. As a service manager at a CIH dealer, I have not sold anyone our software yet.

ETA: if you do get access to software, it takes a considerable amount of training to 1) use it effectively, and 2) not screw something up like wiping out your controllers. It is much more complicated than just plugging in an obd2 scanner and reading codes.

Right, its a CAN-BUS and uses a J1939 connection I believe. I have been researching and found the Service Advisor route that's ~$2000+.

I am not necessarily looking to tune, upload software, etc. I mostly am wanting to see error codes when/if the light comes on.

it seems you have 3 options

1.spend the money on service advisor or an equally expensive black market unit

2. buy pre-elecrtonic equipment- Viva la 4955!

3. buy newer equipment. The later model CaseIH units will give you the code and a brief description on the monitor. If it is an electrical problem, it will tell you what connection, wire, or fuse to check. The new 2020 magnum tractor will let us access the unit remotely, from my office or wherever. (you have to grant us permission every time we connect via a code that pops up on your screen)

Bump, anyone have first hand experience with John Deere diagnostics using the Can-bus port?

You can use CAN King to see what bits of information are being sent but that is normally well above anyone's head to break down. Better idea would be to install some kind of telematics where Deere can read the information from anywhere via a cell signal. But you are out a few grand

Thanks for the input. I am going to try one of the J1939 Can-Bus compliant scanners and see how that goes. Additionally, I found the JD package for a reasonable price, so I am going to try that as well.
