I would like to organize an alligator hunt for me and my brothers, but the few places I have found using google charge a ton and only let you keep 5-10 pounds of meat.

I'm assuming Louisiana is the best place for such a hunt but am open to other locations.

Also, it seems like most alligator hunting is done via hook and line. Is this the only option or just the most successful one?

Rules regarding hunting alligators in Texas are very complicated. Especially in the "core counties" where you are actually likely to find alligators. Long and short of it is that in Texas, they really don't want you to harvest gators.

However, if you can get the proper permits and can find land where you are allowed to hunt them that corresponds exactly to those permits, my understanding is they may be taken by legal firearms. You can also bowhunt, gig, or snare them in Texas. It is more about finding a place with hide tags for core region where the season is only in September.

It is much easier to hunt them outside the core region. The limit outside core counties is one gator per person per season and the season is April through the end of June. If you know a place with decent gator numbers outside the core counties you are set.

In Texas, it's either drawn hunt or private land. If private land, it's much more of a DIY and a lot less restrictive. Problem is finding a landowner to let you kill a gator.

We put in 6 years of gator draws before we got selected and proceeded to go for naughty at Murphree. It wasn't because there weren't Gators. It was most certainly a couple of noobs who were hoping they could figure it out.

Still one of the best hunting trips I've ever been on. We did everything right ever setting it lines at the very narrow margin where a gator knows the resistance.

One of these days, in a little less than a decade, I hope to get drawn again, and I'll learn from the first time v

Alligator Hunting/Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission tells you all about Florida's hunting season from Aug15th to Nov 1. 10,000+ apply for about 600+ permits. And there is now plenty to go around. Central Florida is loaded and tourists need to be aware. 200 lakes in Metro Orlando make it an alligator superhighway.
