How long do you want to ignore this user?
I've been reading about this round and I'm tempted to get an upper I can switch out on my Bravo Company AR. I'd be using it primarily to shoot hogs and paper when hogs aren't around. There's a lot of options out there, Alexander Arms, Odin Works, Sanders Armory, Daniel Defense, LaRue, Primary Arms, others?

I don't need the best. But, I don't want any junk either. My sweet spot on most purchases is upper end in quality and functionality, and hopefully "really good for the money". But sometimes I just bite the bullet and go for something really nice. From my initial reading, the Odin Works uppers seem like a candidate for pretty good for the money. Is that an accurate statement? What 6.5 Grendel uppers should I be looking at?

This forum provides a lot of good advice, so thank you in advance for your thoughts!

I build on either Ballistic or Odin barrels with the odins being the higher tier ones. My personal grendel is build with an odin barrel and... it's lights out accurate.

And it doesn't need to be shipped to an FFL.. direct from Texian to your door!

Great to hear about Odin. Was just gifted a 12" lightweight Odin barrel that will be going on my Grendel build whenever I get around to slapping it together and didn't know much about them.

I have a Grendel that Eyeguy built for me with an 18" Odin barrel. The gun is way more accurate than I am.
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

Might want to consider Alexander Arms Gun Vault sale. A Complete 6.5 Grendel Hunter with SS 18" fluted & threaded barrel. Only weighs 6.5 and since AA designed the Grendel I think it meets your upper end requirements. Pretty wicked looking camo for only $1000.

They sell the upper only for $1289. A complete Wilson arms sell for over 2 grand.

Doesn't really fit the need to spend money but tons of people have been very happy with the PSA stainless 6.5G uppers. Plenty accurate.

What barrel length do ya'll use/recommend? I'm leaning towards 18".

I built up mine with a VLTOR MUR upper and a Satern 18 inch cut rifled barrel. Pricey on both counts but I like it.

Unless you find a screaming deal on an upper only, I'd recommend getting a complete rifle from that AA Gun Vault sale or from Larue with their kit. Then you can tailor the trigger and stock to fit the purpose of the Grendel better than whatever your BCM is wearing.

No matter which way you decide to go, you won't regret going with the Grendel. It is by far my favorite AR cartridge for killing animals and paper.

I have a 24" AA upper which is great but too long for hunting. Built a 18" using Midway's barrel and bolt for my daughter, but the shells wouldn't extract right as their bolt did not have a Grendel specific extractor. Bought extractor from AA to fix it and problem solved. Shoot's 3/4" groups.

Built mine using AA's 18" fluted black barrel and bolt when they were on sale. Shoot's 1/2". Very light and handy hunting hogs in brush. All black. Using a PSA magpul lower with improved trigger.

Bought my SIL a cheap PSA 5.56 and the barrel has become loose. We'll have to fix before we mount his new Christmas Photon RT to hunt hogs.

I also bought a AA 5.56 fluted upper to play with. The AA uppers, barrels and bolts seem cleaner with better fit and finished than the Midway or PSA parts. Mating with lowers has minimal play.

Bill Alexander was a British weapons designer before he came here and developed the Beowolf and Grendel. He uses high end parts or builds his own for well designed systems. The Grendel Hunter with the smooth forearm doesn't hang on brush and is a fantastic buy.

I was going to suggest the Odin Works, but these are great barrels as well. I have their 11.3" 6.8 SPC II barrel, and it shoots sub-MOA.

Depends on the purpose. People that are using them for long range go with 22"-24" barrels. People that are building them for hunting only often go with 18" barrels. I split the difference on my build and went with a 20", and have been very happy.
