Stray dogs on the deer lease

We've had several pictures of dogs coming through our deer lease this season. I'm curious if anyone knows if they will run the deer out of the pasture or just have them a little more spooked? It seems like the deer activity has slowed the last month on our cameras and we've had 5-6 different dogs come through in that time. We only see the dogs once on camera but who knows if they're still in the pasture. Again, just curious how much the dogs might hurt the deer hunting.

PS I'm working with the landowner to find the owners of the dogs. We've never seen the dogs while sitting in the stand.

stray dogs on our lease will run the deer out of the brush. it can become a problem. some of the dogs have been abandon on our lease and hang around camp. we have rescued them and found them good homes in the past.

We've had this problem on our property in the past. When I was hunting about five years ago I had two dogs chase a small buck through our pasture. The second dog had a collar on it so I fired a warning shot that spooked the dogs and gave the exhausted buck a quick out. That was the one "get out of jail free" card. Too many people are dumping their dogs off onto the county roads now. If one crosses the fence now I'll shoot it. It's hard enough to get good deer to come through our place with hunting pressure from the neighbors. I'm not going to have them run down by stray dogs or neighbors who can't keep their pets under control.

Most of these don't have collars so I'm thinking they could be strays. Unfortunately we only see them on camera but never when we're out there. Did the deer activity pick up once the dogs left?

Livestock guard dogs? I have several of them and they rarely cause problems with the deer hunting.

Find slides under exterior fences, set snares. Catch coyotes, dogs and other vermin. Profit.

our lease is pretty small and there are lots of small properties around there and not all sides of the property is fenced. I have a feeling either the dogs belong to one of the houses around and they just run around as they please or they have been dumped. They seem to kind of rotate around and we don't see them often.

A few years ago someone dumped to very nice male Plott hounds on the lease. No collars or chips and no one was looking for them. This year to black labs about 6 months old were dumped. This is in addition to the random dog packs the roam around.

They will absolutely run off deer. They also will chase cattle and horses if you have them. Happened on our property. Let's just say the dogs are no longer a problem. They were a trash breed only owned by trash people.

We have a similar situation as the place is only 200 acres with plenty houses not far away. It could be they don't worry about keeping them pinned or anything.

The owner does have horses and chickens but I haven't heard if the dogs are causing him any issues.

No the landowner doesn't have any dogs. These are a variety of breeds.

I'm not planning to shoot them. Let's not turn this into an argument over that. I've seen some other forums that got way out of hand on that topic.
I just noticed we've had less deer on the cameras here lately and we've seen the dogs on camera. Just trying to feel out if that's just coincidental or could be a factor. Thanks for the input thus far!

Need to know whether or not lease is a ranch to properly address question.

Deer don't like being eaten by dogs.

The threat of being eaten by a dog will keep the deer away.

Well good luck then.

Our neighbor down the road had an issue with stray dogs messing with his cattle, chasing them through fences and being a nuisance. The strays ran to the next ranch before he could do anything. The next owner has Great Pyrenees that stay with the cattle. Not sure if Jesus called them home or not, but all we ever found was a lot of dog hair and blood in some mesquite. Never saw the strays again.

The property is split by a county rd. One side of the road has horses, the other has no livestock. I've seen dogs on both sides of the property.

Looks like a coyote to me. BOOM! Its 3am and I take no prisoners. If youve never been run up on by a pack of dogs youre in for a treat. We had a pit roaming around 2 years ago I suppose was dropped off. Neighbor that lives close said people dump dogs all the time. They will run off everything if they are inclined to do so.

Yep, it definitely depends upon the dog or the pack. A pack of homeless dogs running around trying to survive is quite different. I will shoot them on sight on my place. Luckily that doesn't happen often.

My own three dogs run loose in the yard and guard our house from the deer. They are hilarious. The dogs will spot a deer maybe 100 yards from the house. They will charge the deer, and many times the deer will stand their ground and the dogs will halt and come back to the house. You can tell that these deer and dogs have a long time relationship going.

If they do manage to get the deer to run, they rarely chase them more than a few feet. They know it is futile to try to catch them.
