I thought I would share with y'all a little project I've got going on at the house. I got a wild idea the other day that I would turn an upright freezer into a gun safe. It locks, its well insulated, can hold all my guns, and no one would know the wiser. I plan to place it in my garage next to my other fridge so it sounds like its on. I'll also make sure the lights on the door will be illuminated as well.
Day 1
I picked up the freezer off of craigslist for $10. Needs some cleaning
I completely gutted it and gave it a good scrub. Took out the racks (except for the door ones) and the compressor. I made sure to leave the power cable and the components to make the lights come on.
In the coming weeks I plan to carpet it, install a new light bulb and install racks to rest my guns on. Ill keep yall posted with my progress. I'm also open to any ideas you guys may have to anchoring it down
Update - Finally finished the project
I silicone sealed all drain and compressor openings and lined the freezer with 3/4" plywood. I did a dado on the top for a removable shelf and lined the interior with a low pile carpet. I then added gun rests, dehumidifier and monitor. Ive had it plugged in for a couple weeks and the humidity level so far stays around or below 45% at all times.. Pretty pleased with the end product.
