This will be topping a Kimber Subalpine in .30-06. Will mainly use for Mule Deer, occasionally elk. I will never shoot over 400 yards.

I think I would be happy with any of these, but wanted to get thoughts on the best value with the prices I can currently find.

Leupold VX3i 2.5-8x36 - $359
Leupold VX3i 3.5-10x40 - $299
Vortex Razor HD Lightweight Hunter 2-10X40 - $480
Swaro Z3 3-9x46 - $699
Other suggestions?

Z3

I had that scope on a Kimber Montana, mounted in Talley lightweights, and it was a perfect package.

I believe it was the BRH reticle and I liked that for the occasional LR shot.

weights on those, for posterity:

11.4oz
12.6oz
15.4oz
12oz (3-9x36, right?)

I would think another x would be nice at 400yd, as well as some holdovers, which would make me choose the 3.5-10 leupold with b&c reticle (while we're spending your money).

sightron s-tac 2-10x32 is 11.8oz and has hhr2 reticle, it was $365 last time I looked at them, need to go ahead and get one and see what's wrong with it. 32mm objective and 10x might be limiting at twilight

I like this option at 13.4oz for a 3-9x40 with mil dots!

How much room is required between the scope and the action? I can see the gap and slide a piece of paper in between them with no contact, but nothing thicker.

I called the Talley ring guys and they said this combo would fit but be tight.

That'll be just fine. I actually prefer my scope as low as possible. As long is there is no contact you are good.

FWIW, Camofire has a pretty good deal on a scope right now:

I guess I don't get the premise. Cutting ounces on a scope? Presumably for a hunting trip where success means you need to pack out (or at least change location of) 100lb+ of meat. Unless someone else is doing that heavy lifting, the scope's weight shouldn't even be noticable.

Big difference in packing out meat once that is strapped to your pack vs. A gun you carry around for 7 days. I have lugged around a win m70 with a bigger scope and the dang thing weighs 15 lbs. This rifle will be less than half that. You are probably right that there are plenty of cheaper options that would be within a pound of this solution.

If you're carrying in the alert all day rather than slung, I guess I can see that.

I have a Barrett Fieldcraft with Talley rings and the ale up old VX3i 4-12. The total rig, unloaded weighs 5 pounds 15 ounces. I replaced a 30mm tube scope to get it under 6 pounds. I like it a lot, not sure exactly what the scope weighs though.
