I had one of these before and sold it on a bolt action rifle. Just bought this as it went on sale again for 299. They work well out to about 100 yards on the internal IR. There are a lot more features on this than people realize. You can wifi stream what is on the scope to your mobile device and it will even vibrate your phone if it detects movement. I had mine set up facing the feeder and was reading a book, lol, when I got a buzz that something was moving...

So did you turn on a hotspot on your phone and connected the scope to your phone that way? Or what was the method?

Seems like blue tooth would work better for that as I would not have cell signal most of the places where I hunt...

It seems that for the $300 price point everyone is saying go with the Photon RT. My question is if expand my budget to include the new Sightmark Wraith is it worth it? Specs and videos I watch make the Wraith look considerably better. Any advise?

If you look on the 1st page if this thread skelso said the RT is better at night than the Wraith, but I think he also said the wraith is better during the day...

So watching some more reviews and some were not great on the photon, especially for day use. I know it is not intended for day use, but would like a way to use the gun during the day and not have to remove the photon. Is there a way to use a red dot or open sights with the photon still mounted on the gun?

I have mine set in quick detach rings. I can swap scopes in a minute and the POI is minimal if any.

What QD rings do you recommend?

They just come 1 per pack so you have to buy 2. They are made for the scope. You need a pretty high ring for the photon. These fit perfect

Is this the same thing? The other was out of stock. Looks like the same product number...

The scope creates its own hotspot, and you use your phone to search for nearby wireless. The default password is something like 12345. If you download the app and connect to the scope's wireless, you're ready to be dangerous.

These are difficult to zero during the day as they aren't good with daylight. When you do decide to zero you'll want to boresight first to get it on paper and then use a high contrast black and white target so you can see it. I eventually got it zeroed at 100 at an indoor range where I could push the target just past the 100 yard marker and it would drop out of the light and not blow out the image. I also used the pinhole lens cover to try to zero in bright daylight and that will do the trick as well.

If you go into a 300 NV scope hoping for 6K thermal quality, you are expecting way too much, lol. At 150 in or even 200 in with an aftermarket IR, you can get some serious work done. I will have to get another IR aftermarket as they really do help. I had no trouble putting a round in hog earholes at 150 with a 6.5 creed and an RT.

Remember, it is a digital zoom. You can zoom a little but the image is horrible and pixelated as you increase zoom -- especially if using the internal IR at longer distances.

Can someone recommend a good aftermarket IR light?

This is what I'm using and it's been great. I think skelso recommended it.

I use elusive wildlife ir light

https://elusivewildlife.com/shop/hunting-lights/ir-infrared-lights/kill-lightr-xlr-500hd-zoom-focus-hunting-light-package-ir-850-infrared.html

I've been able to spot animals out at 250-300 yards no problem.

The advantages to an external IR are:

1) Save battery life in scope by not running on board IR.

2) pointability. The built in IR has some adjustment for where its pointed, but not much. Most on board IR setups bottom out at 100 - 150 yards. So while the torch may be plenty strong to reach a further distance, it simply cant be cowitnessed with the crosshairs at 200+

3) focusability - most external IR torches have an adjustable head (think beam adjust on a mag light) that will allow you to floor sneider viewing area, or pin point an object. This is a little useful when trying to stretch the range out but is more so when hunting heavy cover. If you flood heavy cover or will reflect all the IR back at you and you wont be able to see anything.

I've been recommending the Evola for years. It's not the best out there but it gets the job done and is 1/4 - 1/3 the price of some other options. One caution about the Evola is they are mass produced Chinese knock offs so quality control of the machining is laughable. If you buy one, unscrew the head, wrap the threads on the body with 2-3 wraps of teflon tape, and reinstall the head. This will tighten it up considerably. When it gets loose again, re-apply the teflon tape.
