I'm out of town working and my wife sent me a picture of this guy who wandered up on the back porch. Think its an alligator snapping turtle.

First...Rule #1 on the wife, OP.

Second, have her grab it by the tail to see, if in fact, it is a snapping turtle variety.

Update. That thing was tiny. This is on a normal size dust pan

She returned it to the water and it swam away

Crazy, I haven't seen one in years. They are endangered outside of Texas and Louisiana As I understand it.

Also, I wish I could cast a net that well. I'm terrible at it.

I think that's a common snapping turtle. Doesn't look like it has the ridges, and head looks more rounded.
